So What Gives With My Score

I just don't get the scoring system as it relates to finish date. I usually finish my world conquests around the mid to late 1800's. My best games I get scores around 1400 and percents just over 200% (maybe that sucks, but it's good for me). Anyway, I had always believed that date of conquest was the biggest factor in the scoring. I just finished a game in 1776 and my score was only just over 1,000. The population and tech were low, of course, because of how early I finished. But I thought my score would be great. So what gives. I just can't figure out how to play the game for max score.

Population is one of main the factors for you're score. Every happy citizens gives 2 points and the normal people and the elvis gives 1 point. If you want a huge score build lot of cities and let them grow as big as possible. The wonders gives a lot of points and the future techs can give a lot of points (if you can get all 255 of them). The time (youre finishingdate) is not important for the score. Mayby for the percentage, but that is something I don't know.

An earlier finish will impact your score in the GOTM, but not in the regular game - unless you hit the threshold for that "bonus score", which is unknown. Population is the biggest variable in most scores; use Rep/Dem celebration to pump up your cities before finishing.

If your going for a high score, you need to land a spaceship on AC to end the game. You get 400 points for that. The idea is to get 254 cities (the AI has to have one city, or a settler, or the game ends by conquest) and grow them as large as possible and when your cities are maxed out, land your SS. In civ2, time is your friend, use it well. Except in GOTMs, time is yours to use to grow your empire, so use it. Ideally, your SS should land in AD2020, that lets you use time to the fullest to grow your cities. Note: if you do not use the FCT, you may max out your cities much earlier than 2020, so you can land your SS earlier, since once you have maxed out all your cities, have all the wonders, and gotten FT 255, there is no point in waiting to land since you cannot get any more points.

Every happy citizens gives 2 points and the normal people and the elvis gives 1 point.

Corollary: Before you finish, raise your luxury rate to 100% (or to its max), so most of your citizens are happy. This can almost double your score.

Quite right! That little trick can add a couple of hundred points to your final score.

 my bad, I assumed that anyone going for a high score would be in democracy as soon as possible to speed growth. One should also build all the happiness improvements including courthouses and colliseums to squeeze every last possible point for your score.
