[Solved] I'm at a loss trying to add custom assets

Glad you got the help needed to get things working. Apologies I wasn't able to get to this quicker than some of my co-consipirators on this forum. But you're in good hands.

I guess gimp is the only thing that works properly when it comes to that. Tried everything *but* gimp this time (paint.net for example) cuz converting everything in that got a bit tedious and that's what messed me up apparently.

For what it's worth, I use Photoshop - which, along with the Intel Texture Works plugin, works a treat. I appreciate Photoshop is paid software, though, so not an option for all.

Paint.NET also works fine and is nice and lightweight. Still my most used image editor for modding and I have GIMP 2 and Photoshop.
