I recently reinstalled Civilization 3, bored and nostalgic. And from the minute I opened the main menu, I remembered how much I loved this game in the past, and how I'd have to relearn a lot of the gameplay and stuff. But thats not what this is about. Rather, lately I've been interested in modding my Civilization 3. Custom Units, Civs, etc. A total conversion. Whether or not I'd release it here on CivFanatics is an entirely different thing, though I may so that someone can give me a helping hand here.

...Problem is that I'm not 100% sure where to begin. I've modded other games before, and even make my own indie games, but I want to get some things cleared first. So.

1 - I've heard I will need the 1.29f patch to add custom units to my game. Is this true? Where can I get the patch?

2 - Is it possible to add new civilizations as opposed to merely editing whats there? Same with government types and such.

Thanks in advance.

1.29f is for vanilla Civ 3. Do you have the expansion Conquests? If you are considering modding; I would highly suggest you get the expansion, because it adds alot over vanilla or PTW. More modding capabilities as well. You can probably find it very cheap.

Not sure about vanilla editor, but you can add custom civs, units, gov't, scenarios, maps, etc in conquests editor. There are some hardcoded limitations though, such as 31 max civs and 5 culture groups. Some limitations have been overcome, such as the 8192 unit and 512 city limitation.

Yea, I can get the complete edition for $5 on Steam apparently. Might take a look into it. Anyhow.

So I patched my Vanilla Civ 3. Looks like I can add and rename just about everything, and practiced adding a unit in. Just needed the patch. Right.

Alright, looks like I'm on the right path. Just one question that sprang up, though. Well, I guess just a couple. Then I think I'll be good from on out. Anyway, are Sounds necessary to adding a unit? I got an error while trying to create the unit I downloaded, saying it had trouble reading the INI file. The person who made the file did not include sounds, and the INI file of course didn't give any sounds to use. Will I have to add sound to get the unit to work proper?

And second(and hopefully lastly): I want to have more then one unique unit for factions. I know this is possible because I looked at the unique units and the units they replaced in order to see how they did it. I figured it out, but I wanted to be 100% sure of it. Do you just give the UU the same prerequisite technology as the standard unit(the one it replaces) and then disable the old unit for the Civ? If so, yay. :D

That works, as long as you don't care about having anything upgrading to it. If, say, you wanted to put a UU to replace pikeman, you would have to have pikeman upgrade to your new unit, which then upgrades to musketman(or another UU replacing pikeman).
