1. Is there any way to irrigate (without the tech) on islands without rivers or lakes?

2. Is there an option to play civ 3 online? I don' t see it in the manual.

thx for replying

I don't think so, from the manual, It says that you need a fresh water source, without that, you can't irrigate any of your land.

AI civs can irrigate anywhere after they discover Electricity, but before that they're supposed to be limited to a fresh water source just like we are.

Fresh water lakes are sources for irrigation. In the Game of the Month, there was a lake down by the Aztec's capital. I didn't notice it until he started using it to irrigate. Someone pointed out that you can tell lakes from salt water by examining and noticing that they supply 2 food instead of one.

ahhhh...:enlighten so that's how it works! duh, i'm so stupid.

That's not strictly true, Ohwell.
A large inland sea with Ocean squares is not freshwater, and you can't irrigate from it. I think as long as there are only sea and coast squares, that you can irrigate.

As there has already being said, you must have the electricity to make irrigation in the middle of nowhere. I think that is something new, but those saltwater things sucks and realy deep... The best palce to build a city is as near as possible to a river or a small lake. Hope that will give you some help.

Yeah..I think the AI can sometimes cheat a bit with irrigating. They don't always..but I could've sworn a couple of times they came up with some magical fresh water supply.
