Hey folks.

I've some questions regarding Civ III and the two expansion packs: Play The World and Conquests.

1) IF one were to say purchase Civ III and the Conquest expansion pack, would that like be having the game Civ III and both expansion packs? (In various reviews, it states that one should only purchase Civ III and the Conquests expansion as it has all the features of Play The World already)

2) Is it possible to install the Conquests expansion without the Play The World expansion?

3) IF the game, and expansion pack(s), are purchased in a country which doesn't speak English, is it possible to install the game in English? (For example, the game and expansion pack(s) are bought in either Germany or France; would one be able to install the game in English?)

Answers are much appreciated.

Thanks. :)

1) YES
2) YES
3) If you buy it in Spain it gives you the option to install it in English if you want so. Even the version 1.22 patch for C3C is now multilingual. So I guess if you buy it in Germany or France it'll give you the same option in English.

Thanks for that Masquerouge. :)

Hopefully someone'll be able to also tell me whether it'd be possible to purchase the game and expansion pack in a non-English speaking country, yet install the game and play it in English.

Hi eBopBob,

I own the german version of Civ3 + Conquest and I can only install the game in german!! No english version included!

Yep, Civ3 is the problem. You can only install it in the respective language (say, German). To make this even worse, Atari Germany is pretty iffy about translations.
What's really annyoing is that the localised versions are not compatible out of the box (you have to duplicate/rename all art/unit folders).
ptw and c3c are fine (ptw always comes with the international version, and c3c simply lets you choose the language when installing).

Thus, by all means, try to get a English language (US/UK) version of Civ3. You hardly will play vanilla Civ3 much, so a second-hand one without box etc (ebay) will do it.
Then, it doesn't matter at all which version of C3C you buy, they only have different artwork on the box.

Thanks for that Zapstar and Doc Tsiolkovski.

So, Doc Tsiolkovski, you're sure then if I purchase say the British version of Civ III and the French version of Civ III: Conquests, they'll work together and the whole game will be in English?

Thanks. :)

Yes. :)

For example, I have the International (=UK) version of Civ3, can install both the German and UK version (and patches, btw) of ptw on that (the language may be mixed, but the game works), and did install the 'German' C3C (with 'English' as choosen language). For C3C, there only is a US and a 'Rest of the World' version, with different packages/manuals for the particular languages.
Since I also own a US C3C, I tested it and was quite surprised to see that this CD in the drive also allows the game to launch.
And my installation is completely in English, btw.

However, there are some minor yet mindboggling differences between the language version regarding patch levels and 'autopatching' (for example, the English CD that comes with the German package of ptw does not patch Civ3, while most other CDs do...) :crazyeye:

Ok, thanks for that Doc. :)

I've just ordered Civ III off of Amazon, and when I receive it I'll be off to Carrefour to pick up the expansion pack.

Thanks for your help. :)
