Sorry but I absolutely HATE Civ 4 !

It's a more simplified approach to its predecessors, eliminating annoying corruption and pollution, among other concepts that really bogged Civ 3.

I wouldn't call it simplified. Concepts like corruption and pollution haven't been totally deleted, but transformed into concepts which are less annoying to the player (maintenance costs, city health). But they are still there and provide a challenge. Plus, there are totally new concepts like religion and civics (well, new to Civ anyways ;) ). In my opinion, Firaxis managed to produce a game which is more complex than its predecessors, without being more complicated. Which is not an easy thing to do.

I have to admit that I've never disliked graphics in any game more than I dislike the graphics in Civ 4. That's not the reason that I've only played the game once in the last several weeks. The reason I don't really play it much anymore is because it's simply not that fun to me anymore. Once the newness of it wore off, so did my desire to play it. I can't believe how fast I lost interest in this one considering how long my interest was held with the previous versions.

I'm not complaining. Did I complain?

Civ is basically a big board game.

Can you please tell me ONE benefit of 3D graphics in a board game, besides being eye candy?

No benefit, except it looks good, I for one would not buy the game if it did not have the nice 3d graphics, I would stick to Civ 3. All games are now 3d, why should Civ4 be any different? One benefit of nice graphics is that it gives you a better feeling that you are really in the game and just adds to the overall experience

I love civ4. The new features, the Eye Candy is awesome. I think its a huge improvement over civ3. Actually, civ 2 is a huge improvement over civ3. IMHO civ3 totally sucked

I'm not even going to try to search for it since there's been so many 3D graphics rant/whine threads, but one of Firaxis's official posters was describing how all the previous 2D unit graphics had to be initially designed in 3D anyway and then converted to 2D. That being said, I don't blame them at all for making the game in 3D to avoid all that additional development.

Aside from all that, for everybody complaining that the game isn't immersive enough, I personally find the 3D graphics and dynamic sound to be one of the most immersive elements of the game. Upon loading up, I'll often spend a couple minutes just looking around the map, zooming in and out, checking out my cities, etc. Previous Civs always felt like a board game to me... I think cIV feels far more like a living breathing planet than any other and that really gets me into it.

I really don't think anybody can complain that the game runs like crap on their machine and then complain about the graphics. Obviously the poly counts are low so more graphics can be displayed simultaneously. Everybody wants a perfect cIV that runs with Doom3-like 3D graphics on a huge map with 18 Civs that plays on their PIII 500mhz pc with Intel graphics card. Compromises have to be made somewhere.

I love you. Have my manbabies.

Just playing, but seriously. Civ 3 was easily the worst Civilization of all four. I fail to understand how people can compare Civilization 4, with Civilization 3, or even worse, agree that Civilization 3 is in any way, shape or form better than Civilization 4.

Maybe they like their games on easy mode with hundreds of options to cheat the AI, and super-slow-mode end games? Maybe they like spending 4 extra hours on a game they already won, because the AI is hamstrung and incapable of catching up when you've spanned an empire across half the world? Maybe they like micromanaging between 70 cities, with 10 minute intervals between turns because the AI likes to think extra-extra-extra hard about how it's going to lose the game this time.

Maybe people like to confuse their version of Civilization 3, with a mod that somebody made for Civilization 3? Maybe these people fail to realize that there will be mods for Civilization 4, in turn making it better as well?

Maybe these same people will be on these web-boards when Civilization 5 comes out, spouting out the same non-sense they're regurgitating now, about Civilization 4, and how it will be better than Civilization 5... :scan:

Eh, I could not play Civ3 having enjoyed the glory that is Civ4. The ONLY thing I could say that I miss about Civ3 is some of the advisor screens functioned way better (city screen being the main one) - but at the same time my reliance on them has almost entirely vanished with Civ IV because the in-game info is much better and I find that I don't need those screens very often or at all so this doesn't really bother me much.

The main thing is that Civ IV simply is not an improved Civ III - it's a different game and there's a lot of new/different things to get used to. After only a few games I was hooked and there's no going back(wards to a lesser game).

Regarding the "Civ3 has better graphics than Civ4" issue: I just ventured the main page. There are screenshots for the Civ4 GOTM1 and the Civ3 COTM 19.

Who can honestly say that the latter looks better?

Civ4 feels like a boadgame to me ... and that's a good thing. :)

Or, rather, it feels like a tabletop game. A tabletop game where someone has painted all the pieces and made a really gorgeous gaming table for me. Geek bliss. :)

In my opinion I find Civ4 much easier to get into than Civ3. Civ3 was just way to complicated and unintuitive IMO as a new player to the Civ series starting with Civ3. For instance, trading and diplomacy were just annoying to me in Civ3... not so in Civ4. Also, the Civ3 games were just way to long for me to complete. I am LOVING Civ4 for:

- Music
- Graphics
- Trade system
- Dimplomacy
- Civics
- Religion
- Battle automation
- Nonlinear Tech Tree
- Overall speed. I can have a fun game over two evenings of play vs weeks in Civ3

I just think "for me" it is just the perfect strategy game. :)

i hated civ 4 until thursday night, i sat down and thought man i gotta get into this, started invading my neighbours the egyptians, played 3 game ssince then and cant get enough, away back soon!:)

What I really don´t like about the graphics is that they are so generic, it is the same if you choose the romans, japanese or aztecs, they all look the same. I really loved the flavor of Civ III. I hope they add some flavor in a expansion...

My first try at civ was summer "04 when my bro downloaded civ3 gold. I never went throught the tutorial, i just watched him play a bit. I just started a game only knowing the basics and it was fun that way. It was on chieftan level and by the end of the game I had the other civs whooped. Had I tried to get really into it from the start i think i would've abandoned the game. I'll do civ4 the same way.

I agree with about half the posts here, and disagree with the other half. It's people like you that are clueless to the fact that Firaxis pays more attention to threads like this than to the sugar-coated Civ4 is totally awesome man posts found in many other threads. They know it's awesome, but they want to keep making it better.

I was wondering the same thing. civ3 graphics wasn't that great. while I like civ4 (especially bluemarble mod) better than civ3 it's a shame it this graphic engine that hinders the game's performance.

What I would really like to see is adapting some of the enhancements and changes into Civ3C - Civ3 has a much better presentation. I do like some of the changes in combat resolution and other mechanics, plus I want the larger selection of civs in Civ3C ... and the graphics in Civ4 are overkill and self defeating.

well as bad as CIV 4 is doing, looks like their won't be a CIV 5 now *sighs, turns and*:suicide:
