Sound problems

Hi,

I recently bought civ, installed it and played the tutorial.. Everything was allright until this point. However next time i tried to play the game, the sound was really of bad quality, with "interference" (hope you get the picture..). I reinstalled the game a few times, put the 1.52 patch but nothing changed.. Do you have any idea what could be the problem? My system: Athlon 2000, Radeon 9800, 512 Ram, soundblaster 16.

Have you tried different Audio Speakers options in the games Audio options tab? This has been set several different ways when I've installed my game including mono, stereo, etc. I select "Use System Config" and restart the game and it works much better. This is where EAX, DirectSound3D, 7.1, etc., are located. While the game recommends selecting the default MILES Fast 2D Driver in earlier readmes, I've never located this selection.
Good luck.

No, that's the strange thing, my sound is ok anywhere else (movies, games, music).. I will, however, try to find another sound card to see if this could be the problem...

And yes, i have tried different audio speakers (all of them) but nothing changed..

Any other ideas?

I'd work through the "Fix-It List" sticky items and update chipset drivers, audio drivers, and software. Sometimes, backing off Hardware Acceleration one tick can resolve sound issues where old drivers are concerned. Run a dxdiag.txt report and look through it as well. It may provide you with some clues.

I too have a problem which sounds liek it might be the same thing. All sound is sort of "muffled". The way I get around it is by loading a media player, play any song then pause it. Keep the media player open, and paused, and then run civ IV. This makes all the sound clear as a bell. See if this works for you?

i have no sound at all most of the time! just cuts out for no reason that i can think of. have to restart all the time

If you don't care that much about sound, make sure to disable it in the ini file as well ("EnableAudio = 0"). At least it won't slow you down.

It worked!! I did what Lewk did, and the sound is ok! Thanks a lot, i would never thought it myself :D

Nor me, someone wayyyy back when the game came out posted something similar. It just seems to be an issue with certain cards, or something. I don't know, it's tres weird! The game seems to affect the whole sound system, because if you load the game normally, and alt-tab out of the game, and then load up a media player and try to play the song, the song becomes all muffled too. A reverse experiment, if you like. Very odd indeed!

Anyway, glad it's all working for you nicely. I might suggest you check out the foobar2000 media player and use it especially for this purpose, as it uses very little memory which is useful for this game! It's also an excellent player, but takes quite a long time to set it up properly as it's quite "computery". But check it out and use it for playing civ if nothing else, just so you get a bit more memory for the game to chew on.

Also, check the other thread, as it seems if you can "lock" your system sample rate (maybe in the sound card control panel) you don't have to use a media player at all :goodjob:
