for everyone
I invite each of you from different country to write down a list of a special units for each of your country or favorite civs for each era just for fun in the new topic "Special units"
They could be different even only in name and shape for example an indian war elephant could be different from a cartaginian one ............

I still hate civ specific units, but since we're justing having a little entertainment:

Units for America:

Ancient Era: Time Traveling U.S. Army Rangers.

Medieval Era: Time Traveling M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tanks.

Renasciance: Time Traveling Iowa Class Battleships.

Modern Era: Seawolf Attack Submarines, Arley Burke Class Destroyers, B1 Stealth bombers, 1st Armored Division, 101 Airborne Division, everything...

Then I'd play as America every time.

viking units

ancient: the longboat. a tireme that can move in rivers and on the ground.

renaissance: a light cannon that can move two squares each turn or the finish hakkapelitian horsemen which is cheap to produce and is always veteran.

industrial revolution: well, sweden hasn´t been in war since 1814 and i don´t know much about the danish army.

modern: jas (a cheap jet) or the carl gustaf(a anti-tank unit)or haubitz (a howitzer).

A few suggestions for civ specific units.

for medieval france: Heavy Knights (ala Battle of Hastings)

for pre industrial America: Early rifle men

for the turks: Janissiaries

When civ's hit the modern era include illustrious units from the last 200 years.
British Gurkahs
German SS Infantry
French Forgien Legion
Russian Suicide infantry
American Third Army
Japanese Aicraft Carriers

What about the Chinese and other nations? I really can't think of any "special" units for the Chinese.. Perhaps, the cannon (gunpowder) or partisans (guerrilla warfare)?

For the record I can state that "haubits" or haubitz, if you so will, is simply the swedish translation of "howitzer"...

Now I have no clue if sweden or any other scandinavian country actually employs a different kind of howitzers, but what I said above is a fact...

animepornstar, remember, longboats could also cross open ocean - a VERY nice benefit for early explorers & warriors. I bet this is the Viking 'Special Unit' in CivIII.

Well did you all know that China back in the middle ages when china discovered gun powder they actually made attack rockets out of bamboo and the gunpowder that could be China's special unit, Ancient Rocket Launcher. Also a nation with Partisans as a special unit would be good, but the only country i can think of is Vietnam (all through history) and France (WW2)

Russians -renasciance: Georgian Horsemen

Chinese -renasciance?: Samurai

English -modern: Royal Marines

The whole idea of special units seems kind of flakey to me. The controlling and use of resources can prevent other civs from making certain units and not just technology. SO, special units would really serve no great purpose. On the other hand if they would implement it, they should have a specific resource needed that is located only in the "Home country's" borders so they will be the only one to be able to produce it. You could also associate a technology with it that couldn't be learned by other civs but could be stolen if gained through the war occupation of one of the home country's cities. And could only be transferred to others who defeat the "home country". Just thinking out loud at the moment. That way only 1 or 2 civs could gain the technology and but only one would be able to control the resources so intense disputes could arise over that resource.

Am I to now ASSume that there will be a special unit for every era? I hadn't seen that anywhere.

Anyway holding out the bastion of hope that they WILL BE IN THE GAME,as I seem to be the only person who plays as carthaginians. Their special unit would be of either Phoenician or Carthage origin:

Trader (mix between diplomat and caravan)
Trimerene (only ship of its time that can beyond coastline)
Numidian Cavalry
Mercenaries (cheaply produced veteran units)

For Portugal i think the best special units could be:

Ancient: Mountain warrior (a unit good on mountain movemente defense and combat).

Renaiscence: Caravela (a sea unit with good movement, remembering to the exploration that portuguese made)

For industrial and modern ages a can't remember!

Blue Monday, I like the time travelling units. It reminds me of the movie Time Bandits. The Germans in WWII had more than just SS infantry. They also had SS Panzer Grenadiers and SS Panzer units which were powerful units not too many people want to fight against. Samurai, I think, were actually Japanese. The Germans and the Japanese in WWII also built some "super" battleships (Bismark, Tirpitz, Yamato, & Musashi) which could possibly be special units. How about the Germans being able to build V-1 & V-2 rockets like they did in WWII. These were the predecessors to the current guided missiles and ICBM's.

One problem with Civ specific units is the underlying aspect of why one civ should have it and not another. Let me explain: Samurai for the Japanese (based on Fuedalism). I mean, when did the Americans ever have Fuedalism? So, you enter into the whole problem of techs and units not being appropriate for a particular area. If you are playing on the "real-world" and want a scenario to be as realistic as possible, then I can see using this concept. But for the rest of the game, and on random maps, I feel that the game is designed to see what happens when anyone has the same chance, starting from ground zero.

Well Americans had a feudal age .....

in Europe
they evolved from the English
and all the other countries that give to America their people...
