I played CIV and CIV2 years ago - so I thought I knew the drill. I just started playing CIV3 (vanilla) and my taxmen and scientists seem to have no effect at all! The entertainers do make happy faces like they're supposed to, but my gold and science output for a city stays put even if I change to taxman or scientist. Has the game changed THAT much?

I have the latest patch, and even tried it without the patch.

I'm playing the game with a huge heap of entertainers in many all cities above size 21!

They do have effect.

In civ3 and ptw, they give 1 science or 1 gold.
But you don't see it in the city screen, it is added to your total income.

In conquest, they give 3 science or 2 gold.
here you do see it in the city screen.

I recommend getting Conquests - specialists have more use there, even if they require some extensive clicking (some more types of specialists are added and the benefit of the standard 3 are greatly increased, as Wacken said.)

Extensive clicking...that's it. You have better to have a backup mouse ready somewhere nearby ;).
But possibility to turn citizen into enginners (2 shields) is realy useful on wonder-creation races and so on.

I was under the assumption that the enginners do not help when it came to military units and wonders.

Get conquests. Taxmen and Scientist's affect are greater and much more visible. The new specialists are great for those far away (read "corrupt") cities. You can pump up the food in the corrupt cities to support civil engineers who will work on infrastructure that will in turn reduce corruption or increase what productivity you can eek out.
