I have looked through the manual and civlopedia quite a bit, but I can't find out what the specialists do exactly. From my experience, taking a worker off a square and changing him to a scientists actually lowers my science output in that city. I tried this with different squares and have always gotten the same results.

So can someone please tell me what they do exactly. Thanks.

Science is calculated by your science rate and trade...so, really, having scientists *IS* useless after a certain period of time. The only real specialists I use are entertainers (when unrest occurs, and I'm building a temple)..taxmen generate too little revenue, and heck, just by reassigning the scientist to an ocean tile, he can generate more science output :P

yep, if you take a workers from a square that gives 3 or more trade, you actually loose science (when your science ratio is high).

Most people use them only for entertainment, so they don't get revolts.

But they are also usefull for taxmen : with a few of these you can have enough money ith taxes on 0 % !

Last but not least : if you build your cities close to each other and your cities grows and doesn't have enough squares to put our workers, you can assign them to whatever is needed...
