Splitting the Normans

I do think a medieval era could potentially have some interesting action, and I wouldn't mind basically swapping out crusading and religion with the exploration of the new world side of things. But at the same time, I don't really want another age transition necessarily. Although if you did make the age transitions as semi-optional, then maybe having another era wouldn't be that bad. So I'd maybe stick with the Mayans through the first couple ages before swapping out to someone else for the new exploration age. But some other game I'd want to go Rome-Norman-England.

This is what bothers me about the inclusion of the Pirate Republic, for example, starting day 1 with Spain and others in Exploration (I'm naming Spain specifically as it acts as chief New-World-colonizer in VII). In our timeline, the golden age of piracy is a result of European overextension and unchecked criminality in the New World colonies. Whereas in VII, it's almost as if the Pirates founded Havana and other Caribbean settlements.
Yeah, they went a little too overboard, pun intended, on the amount of named settlements the Pirates received.

I do think they work better in a game with Ages, at least, rather than the traditional civ games of the past. At least you also get to roleplay with them attacking Spanish treasure fleets. Though at the same time they could have given that role to England and their Sea Dogs. :mischief:

Civ doesn't have to be srs bzns all the time. I like the pirates and I think a lot of people are with me on that.
To be honest, I think they played it safe and could have amped it up even more. If you introduce a Caribbean Pirate faction, I wish they could have gave us unique named Pirates as Great People, instead of Buccaneers.

Sea dog pirates being their UU oncemore? and neither Longbowman nor Yeoman (there are graphical representations that only valid in Tier 1 and 2).
The other might be Billmen. (Tier 2 UU, Anticavalry capable)

I'd make Sea Dogs unique Great People, similar to Spain's Conquistadors which are named and have special abilities and are mostly naval.
Yeoman would be the military UU. :)

^ Settlement name lists for Normans are consisted of Normandy and England. through medieval Norman Language
- Kaem is Caen (Second largest city in the Medieval France)
- Dovorre is Dover
- Wynchestre is Winchester (England)
- Lundres is London (Capitol of Britain, AKA. United Kingdom. Also English Seat of Power, which William II (as William I of England) ruled from after he won Battle of Hastings)
so far I don't see any Italian City. (Also adopted in modern France as Londres)
- Everwyk is York
- Cantorbire is Canterbury (Where Bayeux Tapestry was made)
- Diepe is Dieppe
- Evrous is Éverux
yet I don't see Cherbourg (written in Normans as Tchidbouo) present in game as Norman settlements despite its importance as port city. also contested in WW2 in Normandy Campaign (Allies target port to take, with its capture, a temporary pier next to Carentan (where Allies landed on 6th of June 1944) is abandoned.
Nor did Formigny and not even Carentan (despite historical significance)

That's all I know. though its seat is Rouen. now in France.

And Note that while Normans devised Common Law. Romans invented Civil Law. I don't know if Normans tried to implement Common Law in their Italian holdings?
Yet Normandy has since switched to Civil Law after France won the Hundread Years War with total conquest of Normandy.

To me there should instead be Medieval France.

No! In fact I wish there was more of the Sicilian influence in the Norman civ design. The Normans got around - they’re actually an inspired choice for an Exploration era civ.

There are 100 other civs that should be added before we do a Norman split
Like Medieval France? Yes. their comtemporary adversary. since 'Medievla England' is largely Normans. (and original England already fell to the Vikings rule before Normans (who themselves 'groomed Vikings' who had long since christianized and adopted much of French subline culture into their traditions except Written Law).
