The Wikipedia page about Spore has some good information on the DRM. The DRM is one of the reasons why I passed on Spore, the other being the dumbed-down gameplay (compared to the original design).
Well, that's precisely the problem. You don't encounter SecuRom, it installs itself onto your computer silently. And remains there. Even when you uninstall Spore.
You'll also "encounter" it when you you change your hardware several times. You can do so five times, the next time the game won't authenticate and you'll have to run an unauthentication tool to be able to play your game, otherwise you are at the mercy of EA to grant you more authentications.
Without an online authentication, the game won't even even run after a couple of days. If EA decides to nix the authentication service at some time in the future, then that's it for Spore. You won't be able to play a game you paid good money for any more.
Much too intrusive and insecure for my taste. But fortunately they took the most promising features out of the game anyway, so it wasn't even hard to pass on it.
When I bought Spore, luckily by normal computer was in for repairs. I ended up installing it on a different computer, and I'm glad I did. Nothing really important on that other one, saved me a lot of headache.
