Spreading someone else's religion?

I can't find a guide that explains religion in Civ6 fully. I'm currently in a game where the Great Prophets are all taken, so I cannot start a religion. Is there any benefit to spreading the religion that has been spread to all my cities? Will I get any benefits from it? (Religious victory is switched off).

There is a benefit to spreading it in your empire.

Your cities can get the Follower and Worship beliefs

But is there any advantage to me making all my empire the one religion? If two have spread in, should I just make sure each city believes in something?

Also be mindful of the religious victory. You don't want to make a majority of your cities a religion that would give the ai that victory.

You can spread their religion to get their religious buildings, if you have enough pressure from another religion (or they convert you) and they also have a religious building, you can get multiple religious buildings in your cities. If you're good at micro you can juggle multiple religions to get all of their buildings, and then choose the one you finally want to keep. This tactic can work well against the AI, they seem to love trying to convert you. In multiplayer it's not as reliable, but I managed to get Meeting Houses, and Synagogues. I wasn't able to get a religion, so I just let other players try and convert me.

One thing that mildly annoys me is if I don't get a religion, and then wipe out a player who has a religion, but hasn't unlocked all its beliefs, I can't finish it off by adopting it as my own religion.

Not true, each city can only have 1 Worship building (there is only one slot in the Holy site)

Are you sure? I've clearly bought them before, does it just override the previous building or something? I'll have to check that then, you could do it in Civ V.

I've been able to replicate it. It must be a bug in that case. It seems that if you have another religious building in the production queue, and you rush buy the others with faith you can get multiple buildings.
