I have extremely poor luck with placing a spy and have never had a successful espionage mission. Clearly I am missing something. Help please.

If the civilization where you are trying to spy, is a democracy; their security against spionage is extremely good. That's a good point of democracy (but not in this case).

Hmmm...I believe it got to do with 2 things:

1) Your government
2) Your oponent's government

It seems to be easier to have success in planting spy if you are in Monarchy or Communism.

Under a monarchy I used a spy to steal tech and got 2 techs! It only cost about 4000, which was less than the AI would sell them for, so it was a bargain.

Also, though I am not too big on doing this, I usually save game before attempting espionage, otherwise it never works and is a waste of money and the AI hates me and attacks me.

eighty: You're not one of those re-loader people are you!!?? You're very naughty.

I advise that when you're trying to do something espionagey to an ally, pick the more secure options. Also, I think that if a mission fails, it will never succeed in that turn, at least that's what i've found (confirmation anyone?). If you try it several times in the one turn, try not trying it several times in the one turn :D

well communism helps... a lot! never seen it fail whenever i try to 'steal plans' from the other civs with the 'safely' option used. quite useful for nuke spotting.

oh yeah i just remembered... here's how to do it

plant a spy on an enemy civ. if that fails then plant a spy on a non-enemy civ during that turn. it will work. i was in democracy when i did this and it seemed as if spy planting only works 1 in 2 tries. just don't try on the same civ twice during a turn. it won't work. you can even plant two spies in a turn (i've never tried more than that) in 4 attempts.

Difficulty Of Planting A Spy Or/And Conduct An Espionage Mission:

Your Own Government:
  • Anarchy: -
  • Despotism: Normal
  • Monarchy: Easy (you get a little boost)
  • Communism: Very Easy (you get a great boost)
  • Democracy: Normal
  • Republic: Normal
-----------------------------------
Government Of The AI:
  • Anarchy: ??? (does anybody knows that you can do something in the AI's capital if he's in Anarchy  )
  • Despotism: Very Easy
  • Monarchy: Normal
  • Commusnism: Hard
  • Democracy: Very Very Hard
  • Republic: Hard

If you're lucky, you can plant spies in every other civ in the same turn.

Democracy is hard to spy on?

What a joke! With the walker spy ring Aldrich Aimes and of course al-quiada this should be modified. Democracy should be the easiest not the hardest (due to the freedom the citizens enjoy, its hard for law enforcement to catch terrorists and spys!) In fact the more intolerant of the gov, the harder it sould be (due to the secret police)

I agree with you Mad Bomber, the more freedom the people have the less security there is, it should be much easier to plant spies in a Democratic Civ. Right now IRL all yo uhave to do is sneak over the border, make up a Social Security Number, and you're pretty much a citizen because you can get welfare and a job and all that. I also think that Propoganda should be possible to use on a Democratic Civ because freedom of speech means people aren't afraid of being critical of their Government. People over in China don't produce or buy into propoganda because they are afraid of the secret police coming to their house in the middle of the night  Democracy should, of course, keep its big economic and worker bonuses, because when people are free they're happy and will be willing to work harder.

I agree with mad bomber, but in the query of CivilopediaCity. it is VERY, VERY, VEEEEEEEERRYYYYYYYY, easy to plant spy in another Civs anarchy. so in other words, if youre fairly sure a civ is in anarchy, PLANT A SPY![plasma] :rocket2:

Fire Emperor:

Ctrl+Shift+E will plant spy, Ctrl E will start espionage options (either through embassy or spy)

The Persian: Sure, try to plant a spy in anarchy if you can, but it should be far easier to plant a spy against a democracy (& cheaper too)

Democracy should keep its immunity to propaganda but that's it, everything else should be easier & cheaper (& bring back option to plant nuke via spy option too)

The military advisor can tell you for sure what gov type is using. I think this is once you establish an embassy.

Try Planting spies a few turns later, I had the same problem sometime back, and I believe spies' success has something to do with how advanced in tech you are compared to the AI.

 I am a newbe to the extremes and I have yet to figure out how to plant a spy, can you help me?:confused:

1.- discover espionage
2.- built inteligence agency in one of your city
3.- click on the inteligence agency logo near this city'name to plant a spy.
4.- if you succeed( if not wait next turn) then you can activate espionage mission by clicking on the logo near A.I.CAPITAL.
