Spy Question

I believe they remove all defenses, so the only thing to deal with is unit bonuses, but dont quote me on that.

Only wall / cultural defense is negated.

Things like fortify bonuses, terrain bonuses ( hills ), unit ability bonuses ( city defender, guerrilla 1 / 2, first strikes etc ), and penalties for attacking over a river all stay.
 
Well fortify bonus and promotion/inherit bonus are all part of unit bonus for me.

but yes hill and river difference stays, althought I dont think anyone expects them to go away since there is zero way to remove hill (bonus) ( except for WB, but that doesn't count) and river penalty while acting the same is something that happens on the attacker and not on the defender.

Spies remove all city defence bonuses, but the units inside get any defences from terrain and unit abilities.

I use a couple spies to speed up the process of invasion. You don't need to seige a city if you can use spies to negate their defence bonus. Still need some cattys to weaken the troops though, just not bombard.
