Anti-cav tier 2. It's supposed to double the strength of a unit when in the same square as a support unit, but it's not working, at least on the attack. Has anyone seen it work? It could be defensive only, but the description doesn't mention that.
Here you go. the only unit with any movement left is a spearman with square formation stacked with a battering ram, standing next to two horsemen. Unfortunately either horseman is a one shot kill, so you can't judge by their healthbars, but you can look at the tooltip and see that the tier 1 +5 vs cav promotion shows up and the tier 2 double strength with support does not.
Same here, I do not see anything happen when I join a battering ram or siege tower with a pike man. Anyway what kind of support unit counts here? Why would eg.: a baloon or medic double the strength, lol. Or should I drag along siege towers in the modern era? Is it a boost against cities or units? Does this promotion work for anyone at all? Btw, I don’t even see the normal boost from the battering ram (extra attack against walls when attacking a city). It is not displayed anyware, so I have no idea if it actually works or not.
Square formation is confusingly worded. It does NOT double a unit's strength when a support unit (like a battering ram or whatever) is attached. I know, that's exactly what the promotion seems to say it does. But it doesn't.
Instead, it doubles a unit's "Support bonus," which is the bonus a unit gets for having another friendly unit adjacent to it. (I believe this is +2 for one adjacent friendly unit and +4 for two, but I could be mistaken about that). It's analogous to the Light Cavalry promotion that gives a x2 Flanking Bonus. Firaxis just did an epically bad job of phrasing it.
