Civ 1-3 all have pretty much the same combat system, yes the formulae for each encounter may be different but the game play is essentially the same. You move a unit into another, as a reward you see a combat animation and the computer resolves everything. I was hoping that this could be reviewed in the next civ. I am hoping for a real time battle field experience that would add another dimension to the game-play, not only would my skill as a diplomat
/civ-leader
/tactician
be tested but also my ability as a general. This also opens up the military unit production to a whole new dimension, rather than making lots and lots of the most powerful unit I can build I could taylor make armies and then take them into combat.
Another aspect I would like to have reviewed would be the military unit set-up. For the past 100 or so years the standard infantry-man has not changed, only his equipment has. So why not make this the focus of production and development. I would like the ability to modify my units i.e. I have 100 drafted men they are all phalanx-men, bronze sheilds and the like. My wisemen have just discovered a new alloy called steel and they have made 100 suits of armour. I then equip my veteren phalanxmen with this armour, and there we go..... pikemen. Later I can give them rifles etc. This may sound a little over complicated but bare-with me
. Essentially you are buying empty 'hulls' from your civs populace and equiping them how you want. This allows you to customise your 3D fighting army how you want, i.e. A slow moving gun-line clagged in steel or fast-moving bowmen on horseback. The same can be done for tanks, ships, aircraft and missiles. This allows you to develop a military force that is totally unique to your civilisation and not just a copy of a 4th century chinese army that does not suit the terrain of your empire.
