I've some time this weekend so I think I'll indulge in the world of Civ 1, can't wait! ;) For me, the first half of the game is the most fun - I love the whole thing but the first half, when you're exploring the world and you're not sure if the Mongols are nearby or if you're on a small island or a large continent and you're not sure what other islands are just a couple of squares away and... well, all that stuff is the most fun for me, the exploring and settling and not knowing what else might be out there. When I first started to play this game when it came out, I used to restart the game repeatedly until my starting position was in an idyllic setting, with grassland with shields, beside a river. I used to hate being stuck in a weirdly shaped part of the island or stuck near a desert etc. Now, the starting position I get is the one I use every time - every starting position has its positives and negatives.

So yeah, Civ 1 this weekend, woo :)

I agree the early part is the fun bit.

A friend, who played CIV continuously, used to play until the retirement graph flat topped. Then if he was significantly ahead, he would declare that game won and start another.

The moment I like best is when I've settled my continent/island and then go out with my first ship looking for others.

That moment when you see some other colored guys moving around on their island.... I can only imagine how the first explorers must have felt when they first landed in new countries.

Now when I think if it - the default relationship is 'peace'. I'd like it of some tribes wouldn't even want to speak with you and just start kicking you off their island. :D

That is my favourite time too. In contrast, my least favourite moment is when the enemy hops on my island first and starts pillaging my beautiful irrigation. There's always a horn sounding in my head calling the chariots lol.

I guess the Zulus are as close to that as you're gonna get:
"Give us all your monies!"
"Give us all your techs!"
"Thank you :D"
...
"Now die!"
