I'm trying to set a static background in some leaderheads that originally feature the moving sky.
Replacing the background and cleaning the alpha channel only results in a weird "cut": the sky is always shown in the top.
Does any leader maker know how to deal with this issue?

You will need to use Nifscope.

There should be two image planes in the BG nif. One for the foreground (of the background :p) and one for the Sky. Select the Sky one, expand the Node so you can access the children, find a node called NiTextureTransformController and delete it.

Another option is to remove the Sky plane completely. Then you will need to edit the BG's .dds texture, to remove transparency. On some BG's you might get pink boarders. It's BG position/size not matching the viewport, because a part - the sky - is now gone. You can move (or scale up) the image plane to compensate.

If you want to completely replace the BG, it might make more sense to take another - unanimated - BG as base. It will only have one image plane.
You might need to adjust the position of the image plane, to fight the pink boarders here as well.
