Statue of Zeus/Templars too Powerful?

What have modders done with the new functionality?

I have seen some nice ideas, one in the 1914-At the great evening of war scenario, where England has a wonder "US Intervention" which will produce units, but they made it dependant on a ressource that is discovered later, s.t. the intervention comes later in the game. But the Wonder is prebuilt, s.t. only the English get it ( and the AI doesn't have to care about building it)

[BIn fact, you convinced me that the wonders are NOT too powerful. I now only have a problem with SGL's in 1vs1's ;) [/B]

Plus the bigger the map, the less powerful these wonders !
Anyway, I clearly see why SGL can be annoying when you play against someone. It seems "unfair". Maybe you could agree with your opponent to use SGL only to improve research ?
Mmmhh... I don't have any better ideas, I'm afraid :)

Personally, I like the way these work. I did tone them down a bit by bumping up the turns between units but I don't think they're any more a "game breaker" than other stuff that's been there all along.

But what I really thought interesting was the idea of tying wonders to resources. It annoyed me greatly when I couldn't build SoZ because I lacked ivory but what the heck it adds some more variability. Then after playing a couple of the Conquest scenarios I got to thinking about tying at least the early wonders to resources. As an experiment I added 'stone' to the strategic resources, made it pretty common but weak (adds one shield) and made it a prereq for Pyramids and a couple others. A couple additional strat resources then tied to wonders might be a way to make things even more interesting in the early game.

i like the two wonders just as they are. like someone said, you can always spend all them 300 shields on building units.

anyway, on my current game, i built the templar, and since im on a huge map , the wars tend to be over (or basically allready won) once they reach the front lines..

i built this wonder because i had no iron. but i am playing the vikings, and their special unit is so much better.
if any unit in the game is overpowered, its the viking berserk. i mean.. 6 attack? with invention?! and not only that its also amphibious. i packed 6 berserks onto 3 triemes, and made a strike against the incan capitol (was defended by 7 spearmen and 3 swordsmen) and in 4 turns i got the city. they couldnt fight back...

it had been much better to have my capitol spit out more berserks than building the knights templar...

so basically, IMO, the 2 wonders are great fun to have, but they are wonders you can easily afford to miss.

Those wonders are especially powerful when you have a SGL to spend on...no waste of shields, earlier in action means more units until Obsoletion.
But normally 300 shields are a lot, so it isn't a game breaker, I think.

I don't think the wonders are that powerful. I have never got The Statue of Zevs before the units were too easy to kill for my opponents anyway. The Knights templar is cooler, but still not crucial in the game.

I rarely build wonders now. I've just moved up to emperor and unless things are going very well my 1st wonder built is often Universal Suffrage (Rush Factory+Coal Plant lets you beat the AI to it).

Ancient Calvary is good, Templars are OK. SGL's can make things random though. In my 1st monarch game I got 4-5 SGL early on. Rush built Pyramids, Sistine Chapel, Leonardos Workshop and Sun Tzu Academy and built Knights Templar. My main problem with Templars is theres never enough of them or if you do have 10+ they get left behind by Calvery/Knights. Useful for defence though or a 2nd attack front while your fast units blitz somewher else or mopping up bypassed cities.

I like the Crusader as offensive defender in my towns.
If a SOD approaches my cities, the Crusader can weaken them and provides some good defense as well.
Nevertheless, on a huge map both are nothing less than decisive. They can add to your military strength, thus making it less likely to be attacked. Nothing more.
