The US military stop loss program seems to be a back door draft, calling men up in their forties who have not been in the military for twenty years seems strange.
One commentator stated that the old blokes were better because they had been trained soldiers.
A bloke of forty four is fitter than one of twenty four, I have my doubts on that.
Why not be honest and call up young men, they will have a lot less old injuries than middle aged men.
Trained soldier who have had no training for fifteen years, they are really tugging on a strong long bow with that statement.

Perhaps thats because thats not how it works.

There is no replacement for experience.

But again, calling up soldiers like that isnt what stop-loss is.

Stop-loss is where a units personnel roster is locked into place 90 days prior to a unit activation. Those 40 year olds would have to have already been part of the units personnel roster in order to be affected. Its merely a way to ensure that a deploying unit retains its core numbers in order to accomplish its mission. Thats it.

Stop-loss isnt the bogeyman that the television stories make it out to be. Its most certainly not a 'back-door' draft, except in the face of someone that may indeed ETS (end of term of service) within the window. A stop-loss would effectively mean that particular person would be involuntarily extended to meet the deployment needs of the unit. The only exception to this are personnel who reach their mandatory retirement date or maximum years of service allowed.

I notice some of these old blokes are infantry, do you really believe that a platoon of men in their forties have the same physical abilities as a platoon in their twenties ?

I don't think you read what he wrote.

Huh. I'm in my forties and used to serve back in the 80s and early 90s. I certainly haven't been contacted yet. And to be honest, I don't think they'd want me now anyway.

The OP is absurd. Stop-loss does not pull people off their sofas!

Nor is it anything like a draft. Any soldier complaining needs to check his contract.

You know what we've got a case of here?

@RRW: That a political opponent is thrilled might not be a good sign. Thanks, though :)

@ Pat: Thanks for the inspiration for the avatar, (and the person with the monocrome-ish eagle too). Hope I didn't copy you too much. Notice, another poster has made his avatar a patriotic animal as well (but not an eagle... funny guy).

The US doesn't hire Blokes.

I have seen men in their late forties, low fifties run sub 12 minute 2 mile runs.

Do they have the same physical abilities? No. But thats a strawman. The question is can a 40+ year old meet the physical job requirements of being in the Infantry. The answer to that is yes.

It pretty much is a backdoor draft. I got stop losed for 11 months before I could finally ETS.

No, thats not a draft. It didnt pick you up off the street and put you in a uniform.

It worked just like I said it did.

Read your contract.

Isn't it funny how people don't do that?

What's next, a thread about how the military can call people up out of the IRR? LOL *fart*.

Somebody needs to brush up on the concept of 'draft'...
