Stop research at certain era.

Hello.

As in topic. I'd like to have my research stopped for example after discovering all Renaissance technologies and not be able to progress anymore (same for AI).
Is that possible? If so, how can it be done? I reckon that would require some file changes before starting the game...

I've never edited the files before, but I assume the file you edit would be:

C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Assets\XML\Technologies\CIV4TechInfos.xml

That is the default location, anyway.

I'd open it with Wordpad, or a fancier code-editing program if you have one, like DreamWeaver. However, you should create a back-up of the original file first, so that you can go back to it later if need be.

There is a field called "disable". Again, I have never edited the XML files, so I don't know how this works. However, I would assume that if you change the disable field from 0 to 1, that researching the technology in the game will be disabled.

If that doesn't work, do as the previous poster said and change the "iCost" values to some ridiculous amount, like 9999999999.

Right

Linked mod is very buggy...
Setting high cost of technology research would still make AI to research it so they would not switch their research for income/culture whatever.
Changing the file is what i did and its working like a charm :)

Thank you for Your help.

I think if you screw with the XMLs (do it in CUSTOM assets though, not in normal assets or you won't be able to play with other people unless you reinstall), you can remove pre-req techs to the extent that once people have select techs...there's nothing left to research. I don't know if the AI actually handles that any better than obscene tech costs, though. The AI doesn't adapt to anything very well.

Definitely do what TheMeInTeam said: NEVER EDIT THE ORIGINAL XML FILES.

Make a copy of the file in your CustomAssets folder, and then edit it there. That way, if you mess it up, you just have to delete your bad copy and not reinstall the game.

Well how hard would it be to simply go to CustomAssets and change the prerequests and beakers of Future Tech to make it come after two more expensive end of era techs, and then cut off the rest of the tech tree?

Like for a classical-only game, remove the required techs for Music, Philosophy, Civil Service, Feudalism, Theology and Machinery. And then make it so Future Tech only costs ~1000 beakers and make it require Code of Laws and Drama or something. Sounds like something that could be easily packaged as a simple mod, with variations for all eras.

Although I am pretty sure that, even if he did edit the originals and made a back-up as I had recommended, that he could just replace the file with the back-up. Although yes, either way, editing the one is custom would be more convenient, but as long as he made a back-up it's not as though he'd have to reinstall the game (and even if he didn't make a back-up he could just ask somebody to transfer the file to him).
