I wondered....

Do you allow Explorers and Camels from other tribes to wander about in your territory or do you obliterate them ?

Explorers are always unwelcome. They usually mean nastier troops are not far behind.

If I am at war with the other civ (which I usually am, whether I want to be or not) I will destroy the camels on sight. In fact, I don't know if I've ever had an AI caravan make it to one of my cities. The benefit for the originating civ is far too great.

Well, I tend never to kill camels even if I'm at war with the civ. It sorta fun to watch the destination of that camel and you always get a free trade route!

Unless I'm allied with them I either demand that they be withdrawn (which with my typical reputation usually results in a war), or I just hammer them on sight. The main motivator for exploration is expansion. Not to mention the fact that explorers can take brand new unmanned cities. Finally, I see camels as the wolf in sheep's clothing.

Explorers must go, but in most situations I'll just let Caravans through. The main exception is when I have an area blocked off and the Caravan just spends every turn walking back and forth in front of it as though that will actually reveal to it a way through. I usually get annoyed at that point and destroy them.

Anything that can ignore zones of control needs to be shot on sight. They are just a cloak for the nasties.

On the other hand, I like freight myself for their spying ability. Two transports full of freight dumped on the shores of your next big conquest are great reconnaisance units, skimming down the enemy railroads, lighting up the map.

They're not as good as spies of course with their 3 moves and far sight but the AI rarely seems to care about freight. Only WE care.

I am more concerned about the other civ getting the research bonus, than I am about adding a couple arrows for a trade route.

I hardly ever see another civ send any caravans or freights into my lands anyway. Most of the ones I've encountered have been where I have captured a bunch of cities and the AI had sent it to the other, now-extinct, AI civ.

Well it seem like every body agrees that Explores are to be killed on the spot. But there seems to be some disagreement on the Caravans!!! I would never allow a caravan to explore my country in a multiplayer game, but against the AI - I never harm them. I like the free trade route and the bonus that the AI get isn't worth a sh*t, they still die like all the other AIs.

Well killing caravans that intend to trade with your cities is basically shooting yourself in the foot. A large amount of imports and exports is essential to become a true powerhouse.

Of course if economics and trade arent important to you, only destruction, then I guess killing the caravans would be justified.

Oh yeah, the explorers have got to go, unless they have your permission to enter your country and keep a specific course...

for scouting and spying and the such, i always keep a 'special forces unit' ready. 4 aegis and 1 transport w/4 spys and 4 partisans. partisans ignore zones of control, are alpine, and they have some combat capability. i move a partisan all over the railroads of a civ, and put it back on the boat in one turn.

Once I even ruined my reputation just in order to attack a dozen computer controled Freights that were just hanging arround inside my border and were using my RR! Very annoying...
