Ocean squares are disallowed inside your cultural borders. The result is sometimes bizarre :crazyeye:

On custom maps, if an ocean tile is within a city's 21 tiles, they can be within your borders.

I think the restriction is that ocean cannot be a part of a city's cultural border if it is claimed by that city at a rank of 3 or above.

;) Yeah, maybe - dunno. My point was to show the strange box that appeared.

That would have to be a seriously modded map. The ocean tile is 3 tiles away at least, and the 21 tile boundry is only two tiles away. I can't recall an instance when there was an ocean tile inside the 21 tile boundry.

Yeah - I thought the sequence was: coast-sea-ocean. And that the cultural borders stopped after the sea squares.

Tomoyo, you have some serious explaining to do ;)
A screenshot perhaps?

OK! But I fail to see the reason why anyone would put ocean squares inside their (future) cultural borders...

I was playing on Rhye's World Map, okay? I had some cities on the Iberian peninsula that had they're cultural boudaries go into the ocean.

I have seen several GOTM maps where it was possible to get an ocean within the 21 square radius. It also appears in AoD and WWII in pacific.

I'll play AoD again to see for myself ;)

Not *that* seriously. All it takes is an oversight when adding or removing land here and there. The editor will place coastal tiles as appropriate, but sea tiles you have to do yourself. I almost forgot a couple of critical sea tiles when making the map for COTM9. I caught it at almost the last second. If I hadn't, then a certain AI civ would've had a few ocean tiles up for grabs if they'd wanted them. :)
