Why aren't off-topic posts more quickly deleted and the threads put back on track?

Often-times when I complain in threads that the thread goes way too far off-topic I'm curtailed by fellow forum goers (which I don't find all that surprising, it's not my place to police them).

When people talk about current events, the inclusion of Hitler or Stalin into Civ, or any topic that might be controversial, the mods jump on it quite quickly. I don't say this to argue about it, but I just want to address that therefore it's not a lack of policing on the forums.

My point is, why can the mods do that with regards to certain rules, but not others. If I look at the forum for Civ VI, and specifically at the "Winter update", it's amazing how many posts (and pages!) people can go off-topic without any intervention. Posts that go off-topic are not deleted either. Then people can open topics like "What do you think is on the Horizon for 2020?" where the same things are discussed as in the Winter Update thread.
You might argue that the topics are distinct, but the content is not. The Winter Update topic does not only talk about a potential Winter Update, but all plans.

To me, and some other people on the forum, it's become frustrating. Some people, specifically in the Winter Update thread, have mentioned not to come back to the thread anymore because it's about everything -but- a potential Winter Update. It's like it's general restaurant chatter. I come to this forum to discuss specific topics. In the case of the Winter Update thread, I come to this forum to see if there is any new thought or news on a potential update. The last two pages of that thread are 80% pictures of Civ leaders putting them into different social media platforms (memes) and 20% things that are generally off-topic or barely on-topic.
I mean, the topic is 133 pages long, but all that is actually found about a Winter Update are a few changes to the Steam Database. Those changes could all be put on 1 or 2 pages, and then maybe 50 pages to have an honest discussion about what people might hope/expect to see.
But almost every "I hope to see Celtic" gets a new sidetrack discussion of three pages on why Celtics are really Celtics or not.

I hope my rambling makes sense, I realise I focussed a lot on one thread, but it happens quite often that multiple threads run with sort of the same topics. I wrote this piece because I would like CivFanatics to return to its organised fun forum, and not this "post anything anywhere and see if you get away with it" (sorry, have had it, feel bitter : P)

Does anyone else like to share their opinion or thoughts?

Are the posts connected to Civ at all? If not, let them know that there is an Off-Topic forum in the Colosseum section of the board (they might have to scroll down quite a way to find it). But we don't discuss the Civ game itself much there (although many of us do play it, or at least used to).

If you see something you think is off topic, you should use the report function and we will look into it.

With regard to the Winter Update thread specifically, I have posted mod text on several occasions trying to pull it back to topic. There has been no news for quite some time from Firaxis and frustration is growing among the membership. It is sometimes better to allow that frustration to dissipate through some close to topic banter. In the case of the meme, the original one posted was taken from a Firaxis Civilization facebook post. That is mostly on topic as members are watching for updates.

Bite posted in that thread in that if news came, a new thread specific to that news would be started. In addition, WillowBrook would post a notice on the front page as soon as she comes on site and notices the announcement of whatever may be coming.

Thank you for clearing that up :)
