Stupid Civ Tricks

in a game im playing right now a great person got me the tech that gives the pacifism civic, i traded for all the technologies the ai had, i click end turn and suddenly EVERY AI HAS 7 NEW TECHS!
emperor dif is a ***** on huge maps damnit.

When in diplomacy, if a civ you have good relations with wants a tech or resource but you don't want to give it to them, and at the same time, you don't want to have a '-1' put against your name, then do the following:

1. Demand appears on your screen.
2. Select to negotiate the deal
3. Once the screen has changed, choose to EXIT the negotiations with no hit on your reputation.

What do we consider this? An exploit? I dont do this all the time in single player however there have been times where a close friend wants iron (or another critical resource) and I dont want to give it to them. I use this to get out of the negotiations.

I'd say it's an exploit, but I think its use is still justified because there's no way to check what your friends think of the person making the request before you have to say yes or no. If I'm asked for a trade or a tech or whatever with someone I'm only marginally friendly (or even unfriendly) with, I want to check whether saying yes is going to make my real friends hate me first, and I can't. There have been a number of occasions when the result of that has been that I've guessed/remembered wrong and suddenly acquired a -4 "You have traded with our worst enemies" penalty from my friends. Which sucks. Given that, I've got no real compunction about pretending the request never happened in the first place.

Actually was about to post the same one. It works on some rulers, in some circumstances, not in others. Example: when I'm just sueing for peace, I get nothing. When I'm pressing the attack, I may get one. If I've taken a city, I may get one more. However some leaders will outright refuse to give up cities, regardless. "China will grow larger..." to quote C&C. Then I just have to take it from them. Can still easily get techs and gold this way though.

Ok the reason this happens is that if you trade for a tech you can't trade for another tech that requires the tech you just traded for until the next turn. For instance let's say the AI had both writing and alphabet and you have iron working. You trade them iron working for writing. Then you go back to the trade screen and you'll see that the AI has no techs to trade you. You hit the end turn button. The next turn the AI will be able to offer Alphabet to you. The AI had it all along, but you just couldn't trade for it yet.

Uh, not. A -1 "You refused to help us" or -1 "You refused to help us in time of war" (or both) are certain to show up if they ask out of friendship and you refuse. If you're NOT seeing that show up you're hitting the "let's negotiate" button and using the exploit.

No, you're wrong. You only get the -1 "You refused to help us" if it was asking for something for nothing.
