Stupid Question: How do I buy units?

I can't seem to figure out how to buy a unit in the city screen. Anyone?

You need a certain technology. Which in turn allows you to change your government style/civic. One of the civics allows you to buy your units or the building you are producing in a city. I forget the exact technology & civic that allows this. I'm only just beginning to understand them all. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me. I suggest going into the government civics screen and mouse over all of types of civics and it describes what each one does once you have a revolution and switch to that civic.

The civic is universal suffrage if you want to use cash to buy the unit/building, but slavery if you want to pay by sacrificing population points.

I think the question was asking how on the city screen do you buy units: it's a little button on the lower right, just above the city governor buttons. But if you don't have universal suffrage (AND if you don't have enough cash on hand) the button will be grayed out
