I bought Civ2 a few days ago for three dollars since I enjoyed Alpha Centauri and heard this was a great game - but how do I assign specialists and how do I not build anything in a city?

A specialist can be assigned by clicking on one of the squares producing food(or other materials) in the civ2 city display window. The city must be over 5 to do it. Also, you cant build nothing. After corporation i believe, you can build capitalization which will give you money for your shields. Also, until then, build caravans and store them for wonder rushing. More details are available by searching back and reading posts by starlifter that will greatly detail this.

Hi Backward, welcome to CFC (I see that is your first post :).

I personally prefer Civ 2 to AC, though I do have AC too. You might want to look at the Game of the Month, where we all start with the same game and play it individually, and talk about how things went.

Thanks - and would any of you recommend Civ 3? I might buy it when I finish this game I'm working on atm.

Gosh no.For me,it has been a huge dissappointment.A dumbed down version of civ2 where the illusion of better ai is acheived by restricting the human player. The end result is a tedious and frustrating exercize.

Its ok.Just not great or incredible. Not yet anyway. But you really need to decide for yourself. Many luv and swear by it.

I agree with Smash entirely. In attempting to expand their product base, they have produced what is merely a game rather than a simulation. I played the game once, and now I'm back to Civ2. Clearly, it was a waste of my money.

with civ3; it's a total loser. Fircrapsis completely ruined a good game, which, given their record, shouldn't surprise anyone. Don't waste your money on it. Civ2 is a great game, has tremendous replay potential, and the scenario-making component is unparalleled.

I love civ3 (though I do turn off the Cultural Victory which is too easy and cuts the game short). However, I can't play it on my laptop, so I still play Test of Time. Looking forward to Play The World:p

Well, a new record for one "regular" thread: Two new CFC members!

Welcome to CFC Jayne!

However, I can't play it on my laptop, so I still play Test of Time.

Which means you might enjoy playing the Civ 2 Game of the Month, here!

Glad to see you here in the Civ 2 Forums!

:)
