i cnat wait to see how subs are used in ptw multiplayer thats when they'll really see serious action.

I doubt they will really bother changing the stats on most naval units... Subs are only remotely useful on small or tiny maps.... Nuke subs are somewhat ok however only if you are going to fight with nukes...

Submarines are pointless for me. I only built them to get the other damn civs navy out of my waters - they will always get out once I park subs all over the place.

I once tried to kill a battleship with a submarine and it blew up quite badly for me - is this normal, or did I just do a stupid blunder?

Subs are my 3rd fav naval unit, they seem to be very effective for me

Yeah, just look at the stats
I think that submarines should be able to bombard enemy ships. Also, I like the idea of hidden nationality for subs, unless they're spotted. (hmmm, this might become my first mod ever...)

Thanks for that link Im afraid Ive never seen that before (Gratious)

I never build ships unless I have to - the naval batles are so ridiculous that i just don't bother.

This is true, but I like to play 'builder' style games, and AI landings on my continent are easier to prevent at sea than react to on land. Thus, I build several 'wolf packs' that prowl the seas keeping track of any large enemy movements. They are cheap to build, and perform just as well as destroyers in combat. The unit I never build is battleships. These are super-expensive and are sunk more often than not by ironclads.

Now i don't get it, i did the odds for a Cavalry winning against a rifleman and the odds are pointing to the cavalry and i NEVER WIN against rifleman. Against infantry it's suicide according to that page but i win more against them then against riflemen.

Yes, but y'all are forgetting the other great use for naval units, one I always put them to after conquering enemy coastal cities: simply sail your battleship into the resisting port and disband it: instant temple (usually ends resistance right away and of course grows the city border back out to full feeding grounds in two more turns). If you have more ships, you can disband them to build the airport you need to hook up the highway to the mechinfantry zone.

Rather than complaining about subs, I'd like to complain about how short the useful life of transports is in this game!

Ahh, thanks - submarines only have a 24% to kill a battleship while battleships have 78%. Hidden nationality should be implemented on subs - if you can't see it or tell what it is, then how does the ai know?

Good point.. Yesterday in WW79 senario the Europeans declare war coz I sank there Destroyer?

Check the 'fortified' box, and the odds swing in favor of the rifleman. Don't forget the defensive bonuses and city size.
Anyone remember the WW2 scenario of civ2? Now, that's submarine fun!

I usually like to wait for Nuclear Subs for to purposes. THe first is Picket Duty. :die: And the second is Mutual Destruction [plasma] :rocket2: If Iam am going to lose, then the world will suffer. I generally like to destroy ALL the GWs that I can before I go!!!

If you make anyone suffer, make it the Iroqouis or the Zulu cause they are always so dam good!

I love subs, especially nuclear ones.

In my mod, I made nuke subs able to carry up to 4 Tact Nukes/Cruise Missles. I sit them just outside the borders of civs that are larger or more aggressive than I am in that certain game, and just wait. If they declare war on me...look at the pretty mushroom cloud that just wiped out your city :D

But sometimes a civ who's Gracious towards me and on an MPP/ROP with me will take a sub inside my borders and launch those same missles against me. So from my experiences, civs have gotten a little bit more clever with this :)

I also employ the Wolfpack strategy the same way hitler did. Against one boat I may surrounf ti with upto 10 subs..just to make sure. I good strategy all round

I build some, if I even play that stage of the game... and I will use them MUCH more in MP.
