Does anyone know some useful things to do with submarines? I've never managed to sink a battleship with a sub - so what's the point of them?

I never build subs myself, except for nuke subs to carry nukes around. However according to ppl, subs are useful for 'watching' the enemy units since they're invisible....

I think there's a similar thread earlier... ;)

I usually build a few subs to escort my carriers and keep an eye out around them while I attack the enemy costal towns. If I notice any enemy ships approaching I get my battle ships ready.

Whoa, whoa, wait - someone in the thread that you mentioned said to go here and not post over there. So what is it, exactly, to post it?

Subs suck. Slow movement, rarely survive any sort of combat.

Subs should be able to sink/severely damage battleships, carriers, and unescorted transports without taking damage. And ironclads? That should be an automatic sink.

Destroyers, otoh, should get a huge attack advantage, and 50-50 odds against an attack by a sub.

Problem is the AI rarely builds transports, if at all. I've never seen on the Military Advisor's screen on (1) Transport before. And it can barely defend itself, too. Only built them for the Marines.

So you're saying that Submarines should have lethal sea bombardment?

They build plenty of transports in my games. Of course, they never upgrade their galleys either, so I still see those floating around. But I've lost a full strength veteran battleship to a stupid transport before. That's just plain ridiculous.

Yes, lethal bombard against certain types of ships would work.

I use subs (rarely) to spot enemy subs. Then you can bombard them with arty or bombers if they're close enough to shore. Finish them off with a cruise missile or ship after they're down to one bar.

Well, not in my Chieftan games, at least. And to lose a battleship to a transport is just plain ridicule. I tried to kill a battleship with an attacking transport and the thing sunk w/ the battleship not damaged.

The AI is very slow in upgrading. For the longest time the stupid English were in my territory with MoWs and then next time I saw them patrolling my waters with AGEIS Cruisers. That was 200 year later.

I use submarines as my ONLY offensive ship, because I don't want to waste my battleships and destroyers on the AI. I use them for transport defense and coastal defense, as well as coastal bombardment. I send out subs in packs of 3 or 4 in raiding tactics.

AFAIK, the AI NEVER upgrades it's units. It builds upgraded units from scratch, but never upgrades.

You'll still see galleys/warriors in the modern era, even with a civ that has Aegis Cruisers and Modern Armor.

I love subs. I usually line enemy continents with them. Any time I detect naval activity, I just move my carrier a little closer, weaken the enemy vessel with bombers, then finish it off with a sub. Carriers have a range of 4 (without Magellan) and bombers 6 - that equates to a large body of water that can be covered. I usually achieve early and complete naval domination using subs with carrier/bomber support (playing on Emporer). I try to include a battleship escort with each carrier, but realize it is overkill when playing against the AI.

What a smart strategy: they disband all ships and then build new ones from scratch. And yet they still beat me demographically in military service. How pathetic on my part.

Yes, I did see a warrior in 2000 ad once. Only one though.

Whoa, what kind of map you play? Aricpolego? (ok I did spell it wrong).

Ohwell: You said you use subs for coastal bombardement...was that a typo, or am I missing something here?

I agree with most of you - subs should have an attack bonsus vs all other ships except destroyers, and destroyers should have a bonus vs subs.

For all those that love subs, do you modify them? I've found subs to have no use for me except for keeping the AI for terroizing me navally.
