Hi there,

I'm looking for comments relating to *successful* multiplayer games of any type new to PTW.

Reason?

I'm awaiting PTW's release here in the UK, and prior to Civ III there was loads of negative comments, but the game was good for me, so I'd like to hear the good side of the arguement for PTW now...

I've seen loads of threads putting it down so I'm not interested in peoples problems. I'm interested in the success stories if there are any(!) ;)

I'd appreciate negative points of view to be withheld, please :)

Cheers.

Playing a very successful game against my brother on hotseat. Very fun scenario (DyP) and so far no crashes. Has only crashed once in hotseat :) but numerous on gamespy.

The reason no one is replying is that I don't think this game lives up to anyone's definition of successful.

I have played part of a game over the internet with my usual gaming friend. We live on opposite sides of Canada, but we both have decent rigs and connections and usually play internet games (Counter-Strike, Starcraft, AOK, etc) without trouble.

You may know that PTW keeps track of how long a multiplayer game has been going on. Our game has been about 2.5 hours of actual gameplay so far. This doesn't count the multiple times the game has needed to be restarted, or our computers rebooted. I'd estimate that it has probably taken us 4 hours to actual play those 2.5 hours of game.

And, worst of all, in 2.5 hours the game has lagged so badly (this is a 4 player game, 2 human, 2 AI on a small map) that I've just founded my 5th city and my friend currently has 4 cities. Now, we're both long time Civ players, back to Civ 1, so we know how to play. Its not that we're incompetent. We've been trying to expand, but the game is just soooooo slow.

So there it is. Maybe this is a successful game. If you consider that we've managed to actually play for 2.5 hours, and if you're not bothered by the fact that in the time we've only built 3-4 cities each, then I guess its a success.

I'm pretty damn disappointed in it though.

:(

Grashnak, I feel your pain, but I am only looking for successes.

You could well be right, maybe there's only one in the whole community, if so I may not order PTW yet...

The thing is it's always easier to see the problems 'cos everyone complains loudly when they have one, it's harder to get feedback from people who are 'doing just fine' because they have no need to make a noise. :)

Medieval: Total War has been totally successful. I know it doesn't help you with Civ3: PTW but it is an alternative you can look at. :)

I had a 5 hour game with someone across the Atlantic. It worked, but was extremely laggy. I've had a few games with people closer and it worked but was still laggier and less resposive than I'd have liked (but we did play it out till I lost :( )

JoeM - IMO, if you liked civ3 enough to be waiting for the expansion, go get it when it comes out. They will probably fix the lag by the time you get it. I bet if it wasn't so laggy it would be fun.
Myself, I've played a couple ten minute games, but it was so laggy we had to leave. I don't think anyone should get up in arms about it yet, I have faith that Firaxis will release a patch sometime soon. They sure won't leave it like it is now...

I've played no games to completion, the longest probably being about 1 1/2 hours before civ3 error, most of the time it takes 20 minutes just to find someone who has the patches and into a game, ave game is about 30 min, played a total of maybe 4-5 hours... way to laggy even with just 2 people and 2 AI's

I'm playing a great hotseat game against my dad and brother, using DYP (the way Civ3 should be). It is more fun than I ever had with Civ3, and I'm not one of those people who hated Civ3. I don't see why other people are so critical. The expansion is worth far more than it is sold for. I would buy it even if it just had the single-player tweaks and hotseat, and would be very satisfied.
