Depending on how much work you want to put in to learn I would recommend reviewing some of the QSC threads. QSC stands for quick start challenge. There is an excel spreadsheet used to evaluate early games for the purpose of comparing the strength of various strategies.

The first implementation to my knowledge was a thread similar to yours, now found here. HandyAndy needed help and asked for others to play along in the beginning. I and 10 other players played from the same starting position and lots of graphs were generated for comparison. That was a Warlord game but the principles I learned, I am still using successfully on Emporer.

The other place to go would be the QSC results from the GOTM (Game of the Month). The GOTM starts from a common start and hundreds of players play it. Many of them write up a turnlog and submit a save at 1000BC to enter the QSC competition. The timelines of the best players are very informative. The only problem with this is that the GOTM uses some mods so you would need to download those to open the saves. But if you want to read the timelines, those are mostly text files or html. The latest QSC results are for GOTM20 and are located here. Note that GOTM20 was a Diety game but you can click on the links to the other QSC - timelines in the Left Navigator bar (scroll down a bit). Those games range from Regent to Emporer but again the techniques are mostly the same.

Good luck!
