I thought I'd post this piece of advice after screwing up a perfectly good Emperor level game. I was Japan vs Korea, Mongols, and China. The Mongols kindly eliminated Korea, then I kicked the Mongols in the tuckus....would've eliminated them if I hadn't had AI respawn (doh!). Anyways, I was doing pretty good, still trailing behind China, but a force to be reconned with nonetheless. Anyways, I was grabbing all the territory I got from the Mongols and had an unsupported city wide open for the Chinese to come over and grab, thereby eliminating me. Arg!

Support your settlers! Let some good come from this tragedy. Support your settlers!

:spear:

Well, it's common knowledge that settlers must be escorted by at least 1 defensive unit (one of the few situation in which defenders are really useful). Sometimes i send settlers unescorted, but only if i know for sure that there's no pester around (barbs included!).

BTW, from what you say, it seems that you play conquests with elimination on. Why? IMHO, there's no real challenge in playing such way.

Yes, I've been thinking seriously about turning elimination off. It does seem silly, but for playing Emperor level for the first time, I decided to turn it on.

Common knowledge aye...but I didn't do it, was in too much of a hurry, and thought the AI would continue to not bother me. They moved across the map swiftly with horsemen and bingo, I was caught off gaurd.

If I was to play elimination, I would surely protect my cities. Of course the best way is to send a SoD out to grab one city from everyone. Does not sound like much fun though.

A very short game, I would think.

In the case of undefended cities it would actually be wrong to say the AI is unpredictable. You can almost count on them to attack you if they can get undefended cities, even if they are gracious.
