Hey everybody. I've been playing Pirates for a year or so and it seems a lot of people have trouble with fighting on Swashbuckler level. Here are some tips that SOMETIMES work for me. (I'm still having difficulty defending the rapier)

Option 1:

1. Choose skill at gunnery
2. Capture Brigantine, Brig or above at beginning of game
3. Stock it with as many guns as it can hold
4. Fire at opponents in ship battles with beginning 2 or 3 shots of round, then swap to chain
5.Wait until they raise the white flag and surrender, then go very close to get the stuff
6. If it is a pirate or Mr. Raymondo, Mendoza, or Montalban, shoot chain till they surrender, then he won't fire at you and you can hit him with grape shot until he has 1 man left.
7. Then board him, use a rapier, and all you have to do is hit the opponent once (Just one quick thrust will do)
See if the gun option tips work for you. If not, here are some sword tips.

Option 2:

1. Get Perfectly or just balanced swords
2. Get Cuirass or vest (optional, but recommended)
3. Pratice a bit trying to tell what move the opponent will do
4. Use cutlass or longsword and do a defensive move to thwart him, then do a quick offensive move. (Duck, then slash, parry, then thrust, jump and chop is too slow for me so I do jump, then thrust.)
5. You need excellent reflexes, so I don't recommend using the mouse or fingerpad (laptops) to click the on the stuff on the screen. Instead, on desktops use the number pad, on laptops hold down the FN button and tap 7, 8, 9, U, I, O, J, K, L (numbers in blue)
Get used to that if you are using the mouse.

I hope an option or some tips work for you, and Happy Holidays!!

A lot depends on the skill level you are playing.
Apprentice level is somewhat simple, the time delay for your opponent concerning sword fighting is rather slow.
Even the notorious Montalban can be defeated with a player 60 years old; keep a keen eye on when and how he will strike (low/high); counter the move and immediately strike!
However, strike with a fast move unlike a long slow move since Montalban does recover fast.
Additionally, make sure to bring a minimum of 100 men to raid his camp since the indians will put up a decent battle!
Above all, stay calm and always view his move first, then counter.
Furthermore, it is best to attack him early in the game when your skill at fencing is much faster.
Finally, SAVE your game outside the hideout before you begin the assault, if you lose you can always try again.

skill at gunnery . . . soo funny
Skill at fencing (extra speed always helps here)
Get all the fencing gear from romancing the attractive daughters.
Rapier to cut the enemy's legs off
Retire before old age sets in.
and remember to save the fatter targets for when you have the equipment.

Brig??
War Canoe!!!!!
Boarding is the object! Speed with a Rapier is the key.

Ruperlittlebea: Maybe your technique works when you're young and have all items. But has your opponent ever had a rapier?? Against Montalban, Mendoza, and Raymondo, you stand no chance against lightning quick chops and slashes. The way to beat them is to fire chain till they surrender then pound em with grape till they have 1 crew and all you have to do is hit them once.

rupertlittlebea is correct!

The only way to defeat Montalban is via his hidout, the location will be provided via a map!
Usually, a Gov daughter will provide the map (it will generally take two visits) or a section may be obtained through the typical bar etc...

Defeating him at sea is only temporary since he will always jump overboard before capture.
The assault on Montalban is a main point in the game, full of strategy and difficulty, i cannot see this aspect left out of the game via a simple ship attack!

Montalban can be defeated at age 60 ( i did it) but it did take around 5 attempts to understand his fencing tactics.
Remember, view his move first than quicky counter attack, via jumping or ducking his attack then immediately counter-attack.
The fight will go on until you have pushed Montalban back far enough to where his strength is minimal, then he will give-in; watch the kewl cut-scene!
The above is not an easy task at 60 but it can be completed, the latter meaning (apprentice) mode, other more difficult modes may cause more grief; perhaps impossible...
Generally, try to attack his hideout much earlier in the game to allow your fencing speed to shine!

:)

U get map pieces by romancing daughters?? I just get a spin with the beauts and they tell u where he is.

And im not talkin bout the hideout

actually Inca maps can be romanced off of the Daughters
On some really good dances you can get pointers to Montalban
(Distinct from his hideout)

I know you can get inca or aztec maps, but thats when montalbans your cabin boy

Time to load up the game again and get a crew big enough to storm his hideout... I last played a few weeks (months?) ago, and realized I was either a little bit of strategy or men short of being able to take out the defending natives.
