Swiss Mercenary problem

The Swiss Mercenary unit appears to be replacing both the Pikeman and the Musketer unit.

I have saltpeter and I am unable to build Musketers.

The Civilapeadia says the Swiss Mercenary is upgradeable to the Musketer, but this is not an option either.

Interestingly, I have an island which has a deposit of saltpeter. The option to build Musketers was available for cities on this island before the effect of Navigation took place (the connecting of cities by harbors). I had set two of the cities on this island to build Musketers. When the Navigation effect took place, the build orders for the Musketers reverted the building instructions to Swiss Mercenaries.

You forgot just one thing :)

Musketeer is the France's UU. It means that Netherland can't build it.
What you were producing is not musketeer, but musketman.

Swiss Pikeman upgrade directly to Rifleman. The upgrade "to musketeer" is just a way to keep the upgrade line.

By the way : I just noticed that Musketeers are not 2/5 rather than 3/4.

:goodjob:, it stops being a worthless UU and now becomes a useful one !

It is very much intentional. Why would you want to upgrade a unit that is 1/4/1 and only costs 30 shields for a unit that is 2/4/1 and costs 60 shields? It would cost 90 gold for each. That's an awful lot for one point of attack. For the price, Swiss Mercs are a much better deal.

The upgrade path for the Dutch goes like this:

Spearman->Musketman->Swiss Merc->Rifleman->etc.

Warpstorm, the Dutch upgrade path puts the Swiss Merc directly after spearman.

If you are missing Iron but have Saltpeter you should be able to build Musketmen(2/4/1 - 60 shields) instead of Swiss Mercenary(1/4/1 - 30 shields) - if you are a playing the Dutch of course.

Since Musketmen are twice as expensive as Mercs don't upgrade them to Mercs when you get Iron(even if it is a free upgrade) as you loose out when you later want to upgrade them to Riflemen.

CyberCrhist and Warpstorm have it right.

Not the way I see it in the editor. It's working well.

This is not the only case of a unique unit replacing 2 standard units. For example Persian Immortals replaces both swordmen and medieval infantery (which is totally equal and the Persians can't build). Also The Sumerians build Enkidu warriors instead of both warriors and spearmen (which they are equal to).

It is just an advantage to the Dutch not to could build Musketmen (who are after all very expensive)
