System crash on exit and then no more game

I don't very often play the game because I find it so addictive I tend to forget the time. However I did start a game at the weekend which was going well. I saved the game and then chose to exit to the desktop and my PC crashed entirely!

At reboot I got a message about the system had a fatal error and had to shutdown. After undertaking all the necessary checks, I am satisfied that my system is OK.

I now cannot get Civilisation IV to load. All I get is the menu screen when I load the CD. When ever I choose play, my antivirus pops up with a message that the Firewall has blocked an application at C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\~e5.0001

I have scanned the Temporary files for any virus that may be upsetting my AV but nothing is found. I have also checked Windows update and have confirmed all updates are installed.

I have tried doing a partial reinstall of the game (keeping my saved games), but have had no luck.

I am therefore stuck.

I believe that is the Civ 4 copy protection trying to run, at least I have seen the same process when running games with SafeDisc.

What happens if you (temporarily) disconnect from the internet and turn off your firewall? Will it run then?

When I searched Google for what the e5.0001 folders might contain, copy protection did come up.

I have tried disconnecting from the web and disabling my Firewall and it does not make any difference - obviously I am not getting a pop up message from my Firewall.

The program does not want to run from the CD or desktop shortcut.

V1.61 - tried again after latest Windows update and it worked! Game now up and running!

Is it worth updating to version 1.74?
