Taize is a christian community in Burgundy, France. A former sanctuary for Nazi victims, it is now a place famous for the bringing together of many different nationalities (64) and Christian religions (though, of course, anyone can come)

Its main attributes are its beautiful music and spiritual atmosphere.

The problems:
It is not the Ritz style staying. Small dormatories instead.
Some of you will pay (unless you live in Burgundy;)

I don't think I will go. Anyone been/are going so they can tell me what it is like and possibly change my mind?

I wish I could go :( Blackadder, you must go for us and tell US what it is like :D I have heard incredible things about the sense of community there, of the wonderful worship services (aided by the music, of course). We use a bit of their music in our worship services at appropriate moments; though most of our music tends to be more uptempo.

Thanks Heaven ;) I was about to miss that really wonderful thread. Well yeah I was there twice, and I even went once to the yearly Taize international meeting. The one I attended was in 1995 (if I remember well) and was in... Paris :)
The surprising fact was that more than 60% of people were... Polish! That makes me even more sad, since people like them had to invest much money to go, whereas in "richer" countries, people were quite lazy. It's a pity, but at least I admire the Polish faith. I even met Russians people who paid the equivalent of 2 months of their salary, got a 2 days trip by bus, to go to Paris. I think this was really a lesson for me... Faith seems to have no limit...

Gob-smackingly amazing!

Still, since 64 different countries go there, I guess I shouldn't be too amazed...

Oh well, Genghisk, can you tell me what its like there (I'll need a bit more encouragement if you expect me to even think more of going;) )

Warmful. VERY. I mean you know nobody the first day, but after 2 days you know everyone. Almost ;) Provided you speak English ;)
That seems to be the case, according to your profile hehe.

The only thing is that food is provided by Army. No comment. It's not excellent but it's okay. And when you are hungry.. Another thing is that you won't sleep much. When I went to the Paris congress, we slept in gymnasiums. And the earliest bed time was 1am. Indeed, prayer till midnight. Then took the tube to go back sleeping. 1am then. You are woken up at 6 oclock. And this lasts one week. So you won't be surprised that before prayers and mass, you can see 90% of people seating near a pillar and ... sleeping! Yeah you sleep everywhere, whenever you can! Plus I was not that lucky since i was volunteer for organizing prayers so actually I went to sleep at 2.30 am! Yeah I was surely stupid but I liked that. Organizing everything for people the day after. That was hard but it was great. Maybe one of the greatest period in my life. Only one hard tiring week but really excellent.
Oh and I forgot: 5pm = tea time. :) No kidding.

Hey, Black, you still there? Hey! HeeeEEEEYY! Damn he's gone. Sh** I disgusted him. I knew that ;):D

Sorry, I was busy writing about disgusting animals (rats, I forgot Gengisk!) :D

You get 5 hours sleep, no wonder people were snoozing off. If I don't get to go, at least this info will be useful to those who are going (BTW, I 'm working on going with my Dad's permission, it is a school trip!)

Provided you speak English That seems to be the case, according to your profile hehe.

Oh dear, I only speak Anglo-Scottish:crazyeyes . This will mean no more 'aye' or 'oochs ';)

oh dear, the worst accent I ever heard is Scotland. Damn I even heard that even English people couldn't understand what Scottish said. Maybe it's a bit like Paris accent and South accent. People hardly understand each other. But anyway, when you are in Taize, automatically you pay attention to the others and then speak slowly and clearly.
But really, yeah go at least once in your life. That's great. And who knows, you might find you way too ;) after being there.

Okay, I will go, either this year or another.

I will probably put something in this thread after the time at Taize (whether I go or not does not matter, just so others who languish in curiosity can be put out of their misery.)

People hardly understand each other.

Yeah, I can hardly understand Americans, and Welsh people sound so slow...
However the English and Scottish have always been able to communicate, whether it was by sword, bow, shared monarchs or writing. Or stealing!

Please do let us know how it was when you go. I would be most interested, and I've read with great interest Genghisk's descriptions. I'm glad you've decided to go :) God's blessings on your experience.

by the sword? damn, the way of the sword may be the easiest way to communicate indeed :D You strike first, then discuss diplomacy after :) My fiLoSfY too.

Anyway, good luck and good trip. I hope really you could come once. I don't know where it will be this year. But don't worry it's at the end of the year. Or you can just have a trip to Taize. And then go to Lourdes. I suppose you know Lourdes too...

Just you lot remember, I said this year or another. .
But I will try......

Anyone else going out there?

My philosophy in regard to Scotland/England is , if you have a useless monarch, share him! Best trick we ever played on the English, the Stuarts!:D
