Take Over for an AI mid- multiplayer game?

I'm playing a multiplayer (LAN) game with a couple friends and about 8 AI players. One of my friends spawned right next to me and I took his capital because he is terrible.

Is there any way that when we load the game for our next session, he can start playing as one of the AI civilizations? That would be great.

Some player has to start the game as that civ, or the game will not launch. But after the game launches there is nothing keeping him from dropping and rejoining as another AI civ.
