Tech/Civic - Chasing Eurekas vs. Beelining High-Tier

Been playing Civ 6 for a month now. When advancing in Tech/Civics, I find myself not really having a long-term plan but rather going after the Tech/Civics that I can get Eurekas for. Even when I know a Tech/Civic is gonna be real useful for me, I think about: 1. The easy stuff I'm forgoing to get it. 2. How much easier it'll be if I just hold off a bit and get the Eureka.

How do other people play?
 
Unless a particular tech is very important at that time (like Archery, Iron Working (for Rome), Currency, Industrialization, Rocketry, etc.), I usually try to stick to techs I have eurekas far. I'll also try to get the appropriate eurekas if possible, and if I'm about to get one soon, I'll stop researching the tech half way through.
 
I feel like this is something I've gotten a better feel for. I'm sure some of the strongest always-win-on-Deity players have clear rules for what they do and don't do, but for now I still kind of feel my way forward in each game. The biggest breakthrough for me was to realize that the Eurekas don't need to be accidental. Pursue Eurekas on both Techs and Civics with an eye to your long-term goals. For instance, a well-timed builder can knock out about four Eurekas in 3 builds if you have the right resources. A well-placed second university will knock out two Eurekas. Here are three symbiotic good early--to-mid-game Eureka Research/Build sequences that you shouldn't necessarily beeline, but that you can pursue fairly quickly as part of a balanced research approach (you'll need to research some other prerequisite technologies for these, but keep the Eurekas in mind to speed up your research):

1. Build 3+ Slingers > Kill Barbarian with one > Research Archery > Promote 3+ Slingers to Archers > Research Machinery > Promote 2+ Archers to Crossbows > Research Metal Casting > complete trees 2 & 3 >
2. Kill at least 3 Barbarians > Research Bronze Working > Build Encampment > Build Barracks (or Stables) > complete tree 3 > Build Armory > Research Gunpowder > Build Niter Mine
3. Research Mining > Build Quarry > Research Masonry > Build Ancient Walls > Research Engineering > Build Aqueduct/Baths > Research Military Engineering
4. Follow Tree 3 through Engineering > Build two Catapults > Complete tree 1 > Promote Two Catapults to Bombards > Research Siege Tactics > Build Siege Engineer > Build 2 forts > Research Ballistics > Promote all Crossbows to Field Cannons.

You don't have to follow every step here to max out the Eurekas. It won't always make sense. Sometimes you skip Encampments, Barracks, Armories, Catapults, Bombards, Siege Engineers and Forts. But if you generally follow this strategy, you'll end up with a fast-developing tech tree and some very useful units, buildings and resources pretty quickly. Because I don't see a clear way forward with Eurekas from these same units afterward, you'll also want to follow the Melee, Cavalry and Naval advancement strategies, which pay off more later in the game with bonuses that lead to Electricity, Replaceable Parts and Military Science, among others.

Very nice list. I would add:
A. Explore with Units > Find 2nd Continent > Research Foreign Trade > Build Trader > Research Currency > Build Commercial Hub
B. Follow Tree B through Foreign Trade > Grow Civ Pop to 6 > Early Empire > (Maybe have built a district) > State Workforce > Explore with Units >Meet 3-City States> Political Philosophy
 
Playing the lets get all eureka's game gives what benefit?

Do not get me wrong, there is a really nice run to industrialisation that really encourages you to skip eras which has its own loss of GP and envoys attached.

I often rush to get frigates, but the frigate eureka is for a musketman to kill a unit, hell I do not even know if I Have niter yet! But getting those frigates early...more on deity at the same time as other civs, makes a big difference.

Going for every eureka I believe hobbles your overall strategy if you have one. I think it is one of the things that makes you weaker if you go for 100% eurekas when 50-70% is plenty.
 
Half the time, I tech too fast for eurekas to trigger...

The frigate above, the military engineer or the 3 sewers are on top of my head examples of badly designed, impracticable in most games.
 
My simple rule is to reseach the tech/civic until half and then switch to another tech/civic and let eureka/inspiration fill them in.

The trick is to know when it is necessary to forego some eureka/inspiration and what eureka/inspiration that you are not likely to get, so you research it the hard way asap (if it is on the tech/civic tree path to some critical tech/civic for your strategy).

You should at least get eureka/inspiration for 50% of the time. They are meant for efficient play and missing too many may cost you to fall far behind in higher difficulty levels.
 
Civics are a bit different: There appear to be far fewer "critical" civics than techs.
To the point to where if you have the Eureka for say the civic that allows corps, it's probably better to beeline to it now rather than wait to get all the eurekas to its prereqs.
In addition, using the bypassed civics to switch policies without spending gold almost at will is a very good tactic.
And finally, there's a lot more "dead end" civics than techs.
