Tech Tree Editor

Hi Gary Childress, :wavey:

great that you are posting here again! :) I´m not aware of any special techtree editors for Civ 3. I´m doing my techtrees with the normal C3C editors and they are all working very well with Win10. The same is true for the advanced C3C editor made by Quintillus.

Are you planning to do some new stuff of WW2 for C3C ?

If you're just looking for something to help with the planning part of tree editing, download Open Office, the full version comes with a Flowchart program (I forget the name). That'll make planning very easy.

Hi Civinator! Great to see you are still around. I can't remember the names of the editors anymore but I think Steph's editor had the same function where you could view the techs on a screen just like in the game and then drag them around on the screen to a new position. However, I can't get Steph's editor to work on my computer anymore. :(

I'm not planning on doing any new art. Just coming back to play a little Civ III and wanted to mod the conquests file a little for my own pleasure.

Unfortunately Steph's editor never did work well for me. When trying to open a biq with his expanded editor, I always receive an error message - and for using the Quintillus editor it seems you must have an older version of Java.

Using the normal editors 1.00 and 1.03, that are coming with C3C, is working very well for me with Win10. I use editor 1.00 coming with vanilla C3C because editor 1.03 (the version after the C3C updates) has lost the function of providing scientific great leaders. For modifying complex techtrees I mostly do a screenshot of the techtree and copy and paste the changes I want to do in that screenshot to see what is possible. Here is an example for a possible change I will do in era 2 of the RARR mod: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/rise-and-rule-revisited-epic-mod.549166/page-36#post-15452049

You are correct, Steph's editor has the ability to drag-and-drop tech tree items into place visually. As far as I know, it's the only editor with that ability (I have not replicated it in my editor).

I've also run into issues with getting Steph's editor to run reliably, though, and not just on Windows 10. I made a post with links to both of the most recent versions in this post; if you have 64-bit Windows, try the first link, which is not the official 0.82, but a non-versioned update Steph released later. I just re-downloaded it on my 64-bit Windows 10 laptop, and it's working, including the Tech Tree builder (which is under TECH, and then the "Builder" button in the middle-top of the screen; it requires era and civ selection before you can drag-and-drop it)

One other note is that Steph's editor is picky with compressed BIQs. You can decompress it either with the Firaxis editor (if you go into the options and un-check to compress saves), or with the editor wrote (which supports opening compressed BIQs reliably, but cannot compress them when saving).

Hopefully, with both the 64-bit updated version of Steph's editor and a decompressed BIQ, you'll be in business!

This has happened to me also, like when I have downloaded CCM1 or 2 and wanted to go into the biq to look around and I would get that error message. I found that if the biq was opened in the Civ3 editor and saved, then Steph's editor would then open it. I know that different OS platforms seem to have trouble with it at times and Steph had uploaded a number of different versions , but I have been using it for years, first on Vista and now on Win 8. The mentioned tech editor is very helpful.

I could do another try with a decompressed biq, but at present this is not needed, as I´m very happy with the other editors, especially the Quintillus editor, that allowed me, to increase the limits for a cultural victory to values far beyond the allowed levels in the standard C3C editors, so the cultural victory can be enabled in the next version of CCM2.

I've wanted to use the Quintillus editor for a while now, but the one time I tried there was something missing from my computer, which is probably Java that you mentioned in an earlier post. Do you recommend this editor? If so, then maybe I'll look into getting Java or fixing whatever was blocking me before.

The Quintillus editor allows to bypass many arbitary Firaxis limits (but not all !). Per example it allows:

- The next version of CCM2 will hold the cultural victory again, as this editor allows to exceed the cultural victory limit of max. 50,000 culture per city and 500,000 per civ of the Firaxis editors (what would be much too less considering that a great artist in CCM2 has a standard of 1,000 culture points).

Spoiler :
Normal C3C editor:

The victory limits of the next version of CCM2 with the Quintillus editor:

culture-victorylimit-jpg.529096

- Being able to place landmark terrains of any type.
- Deepwater harbour support.
- Being able to have maps of more than 362 tiles in either width or height (although not both at the same time).
- Being able to bypass many other arbitary Firaxis limits. For example, you can give a building more than 100 culture per turn, or give buildings negative
maintenance costs or give landunits sea-tactics and so on.

The Quintillus editor was concepted to work with Java 8. The current Java 11 breaks the editor pretty completely:

So I avoid to do the 'upgrade' from Java 8 to Java 11.
