Tech Tree Leaves Player Offenseless

This isn't so much a bug as a whopping great big whole in the design of the Tech tree. I am playing on the default difficulty setting so I am much more advanced than my neighbouring civs. I had machine guns and riflemen, then all of a sudden I hit the Modern Era and I'm left without any ability to create offensive players. I am literally being overrun by catapults and horse archers while I am reseaching flight. The only offensive unit, rilfemen, instantly turn to SAM Infantry mid-production and without notification. SAM Inf. and Artillery are the only units I can now create, none of which can attack land units. Which means I can bombard a city but not take it and I can't clear out the hords of primitive yet invincible units running all over my civ.

I attack land units all the time with Arty.

Artillery units can always attack conventionally, and should flatten horse archers. I'm not sure about SAM's but I think they can as well. Are there really no other units available? And if so, why are you researching flight, since aircraft can't attack directly? Why not go for tanks?

Ummm...have you tried using artillery units ? As the previous 2 posters pointed out,and I have done this in-game, against low tech opposition it can be very deadly indeed.

First off, wrong forum - clearly not a bug. Secondly, why are you blaming the game for your decision not to research military techs? Assembly Line will give you Infantry which are easily enough to defeat those catapults. Thirdly, as pointed out above, artillery can attack just fine.

That's the problem since civ3 (or even civ1/2 - din't play them much) - it doesn't allow you to build legacy unit types.

In civ3 research tree was less flexible, so you always had some horseman units, some defender units and some melee attacker units available at any research stage. The only problem was that you couldn't not build a chap warrior in the new city, but had to build say infantry which took 80 turns instead of 10.

With civ4 research path is much more flexible, so I think there are possible paths of research when this you-can-build-only-most-modern-units "feature" actually leaves you without certain type of units (e.g. attackers or defenders).

And this also happened in civ3 when produced musketman turned out to be infantry if this tech was discovered during build time.

This is more a general discussion or strategy question and not a bug. From the title I initially though you had the right tech for units but couldn't build them.

Umm, what about tanks and modern armor? Also you're missing a concept here, every unit with a strength can be used offensively, unless it is explicitly marked "can only defend". Just look at the special abilities of each unit (strength modifiers vs other units for example) to tell what unit to use against a given enemy. Even better, have a mixed stack and use stack attack -- it seems to result in the best possible matchup for each of your units, though I haven't tested that.
