Hi i am new to playing deity, and it takes me untill about 1900 to finish getting the discoveries.

When do you people finish getting all the discoveries(future technology 1)

And also i find it hard to keep my discoveries low on monarchy, its always about 9 or so. Caravans dont seem to work very well. When i make trade routes i only get +1 trade usually

I don't really know how long time it takes me, but I'm not very fast either.
When the city starts to grow the trade routes becomes a lot more valuable, e.g. they grow one for every pop over 20 in a city. When it comes to science and trade it's not the route that's valuable, but the delivery. When you move a caravan into a city you'll get gold, but also the same amount of beakers added to your next discovery. Check the amount of beakers you have researched (press F6) before and after you deliver a caravan and you'll see that it has grown.
See the civ2 war academy in the "Civfanatics Quick links" to the top right of this page for more information about trade and other parts ofthe game:)

Wow i didnt know that, that should help me a lot
But i am on a continent alone and i dont know when to get off it and go ot war, Is there a certin discoveries i should get before leaving it?

Very experienced people manage to get all discoveries AND build a spaceship well before 1000AD
Switch to Apolyton strategy forum and you will see that the player named solo manages to launch a spaceship before 500AD almost in any game he plays

If you are new at playing deity, my advice would be: don't take too much care of the results achieved by very experienced players. You will improve your gameplay by playing, and also by reading (War Academy here at CFC, or Great Library at Apolyton) and asking questions on this forum.

A spaceship before 500A.D. wow that crazy!!
i just want factories and spies so i can go to war sooner, is there any where i can download early games of good people? I have read a lot of what to do, but it would help to acaully see someone else doing. Doing is much harder then reading it heh.

And also, everyone seems to make a huge deal of caravans. I do agree they are very good. Should i go for trade right after monarchy so i can do caravans early?

Early in the game caravans give u very little gold and trade are they really important early game or not?

Of course caravans are by far the most valuable unit:goodjob:
You can make rewarding deliveries very early using foreign trade:
find a foreign city overseas (the bigger the better), build one of the 3 commodities demanded in that city and send it by boat

Hmm, send a caravan to a foreign city, i well have to try that.

Also i find every time i make a new city it make my science worse, is there a certin amout of cities i shoudl make or anything?

Well, if im not mistaking, the more cities you got, the higher the total beaker production...
so that should lead to more science..

Maybe you found cities at the same rate as you discover techs?
Every time you discover a new tech, it adds more beakers to the cost for the next tech so the science get worse over time. So if you don't increase the amount of beakers totally produced proportionally to the science cost, it will take longer and longer to research each tech:)

At deity level, happiness problems are acute. If you build too many cities, you get the so-called 'red faces' (unhappy citizens) or 'black faces' (double unhappy citizens).
IIRC on a standard map, the first citizen is blue (satisfied) with a max of:
4 cities under Despotism
6 cities under Monarchy
8 cities under Republic
10 cities under Democracy
If you don't build more cities, you minimize happiness problems.

The other solution, developed by my friend DaveV, is to build just as many cities as you will and never let them grow past size 2 or 3. It is named ICS and works like a charm once you master it.

If you don't build more cities, you minimize happiness problems.
Or you could switch to democracy/republic once your cities regularly begins with a black guy, to save some luxuries when celebrating.:) Unless you have HG/CfC, this is the only way to be able to celebrate your cities with an odd pop in republic.

only 6 cities under monarchy. hmm..
well i was making to many and was starting to depend upon money and buying units for decent happiness. and then started getting black people like u said.

So with hanging gardens shouldnt this allow many more cities to be made?

You guys also say republic allows more cities. I agree but it is not smart to switch to republic untill u have the chapel right? Well it takes me a while to get this wonder, but i suppose i well start getting it faster with more practice. I have learned a lot from this thread. Thanx funxus and la fayette

samson and solo, the champions of early Republic, don't build any wonder before switching to Rep, only a temple in every city, which allows 8 cities size 3 :egypt:.
You can have a try: if you don't build more than 8 cities, the first citizen is blue (satisfied) and the other 2 are kept content by the temple (with Mysticism).
The main problem is to get enough gold to build 8 temples (which is not easy in the early game).
But, if you choose early Rep, you need training and skill later on because it is much more difficult to manage than Monarchy (that is why most people prefer to have HG and Mike before switching).

Well that sounds quite hard, i don't think i try that strategy yet, i think i have much more basic skills to attend to :)
Just one last question then i think ill be good for a long time.

In your last msg u said a temple keeps the other citizens content by a temple. But then u said in brackets with Mysticism. Why with mysticism?

La fayette, what's the thing with the size 3 cities?

I've read somewhere before there's some sort of 'size 3 city' strategy..
Though, i could be mistaking..

As mentioned before, Size3 cities will be content at Deity level with just a Temple, which is relatively cheap. Also, every time you add a citizen the number of food you need to put in the box goes up by another 10 sheafs. So the idea behind Size3 growth is to maximize your Food until you reach Size3, then maximize Shields until you produce a settler, which drops you back down to size 2 again, but enough of the food box should have been filled with sheafs that you get back to Size3 again quickly. You can do this trick ad infinitum, but at some point you are going want to grow your cities, and the quickest way to grow is with WLTCD. Again, Size3 is the key because they are the smallest size that will grow 1 citizen per turn when celebrating in Rep or Dem.
