ah i see, that'll be a good way to expand very rapidly.. Will require alot of micromanagment though, to keep the box filled when dropping back to size two..

Will people remain content with just a temple even after you've reached the 8 city cap (for republic)?

Thats a good tip to use that size3 city strategy, but how big will you expand? and once you stop expanding your cities will grow and won't it be extremely hard to keep them all happy then?

I've never played it, but it sounds like 8 cities would be optimal. After that the riot factor would kick in.

Without looking at it, I would guess you build your 8 cities, then build more settlers to work the land. While the land is being developed you build caravans for deliveiry and wonders, then when it's possible go into celebration mode and in a few turns you will have 8 huge cities. Then you go into expansion mode again.....? Or maybe just stay with those 8 huge cities and focus on science and an early spaceship....?

Actually, this is part of a method including best possible growth for the SSC:
You build 7 or 8 cities out of which one (the one with the best possibilities: grassland, river, ocean, special tiles providing numerous trade arrows,...) will be your SSC. The other 6 or 7 will be 'helper cities'.
You research Republic ASAP and grow all cities to size 3. Meanwhile you research Medicine and build 6 caravans, which allow you to build Shakespeare and grow your SSC to size 21 (WLTCD + discovery of Construction and Sanitation required).

This is the core of the method developped by samson and solo, with which they have achieved extraordinary results in the field of early landing (arrival on AC before 500AD on all kinds of maps :goodjob:).

The solution mentioned by DoM (grow all 8 cities to huge size) has been advocated by MarkusF (and myself). It works. But the problem at deity level is happiness: ST solves the problem for the SSC, but it takes time and gold and skill to build the wonders and/or improvements required for the other cities.

heh, it's funny you say that la fayette, because my last game (about 3 days ago) i used exactly that strategy.. Untill about 1500 ad I had 8 cities, all of size 8 and a SSC of size 40.. Had to grow a little though, expanded to 12 cities size 15-20 to be able to build spaceshipparts a little faster..
Spaceship arrived in 1940, which is actually my earliest arrival on deity as of yet..

I can win a deity game with out to much trouble due to this forum!! thanx people
But i still cant get technology fast enough in B.C. i couldnt get the chapel untill 600A.D. and i feel the chapel is important, my game changes from there and i start doing better.
Other then Trade routes which i will try to do more of, any suggestions of how to improve my science?

Btw i tried an SSC and i think it might of been good but it doesnt seem to be good of much use early game. I get colossus and then there a long period before Observitory and Issac Newtons.

Hmm It depends what i start with, but after Monarchy i get Writing then Trade. I get monarchy and writing very fast then it takes me a while to get a trade.

There's a couple factors you might want to consider.

1) Are you expanding enough? More cities = more science (generally). This certainly isn't always necessary (OCC being an obvious example) but it often helps. Expanding rapidly in the early game helps by giving an extra worker (the "free" city square), it helps control unhappiness by keeping cities small until other means are available to control it, and just having multiple cities growing in parallel can enhance your ability to research - particularly once you start celebrating in republic.

2) are you focusing your research? every tech you get makes it take more beakers to research the next one. If the chapel is a priority, perhaps you have to spend less time researching maritime techs or military techs and focus your efforts on going directly to your goal. Researching these "off-topic" techs cost you not only in the time you spend researching them, but in the additional time the cost you eventually researching the things you do want.

3) Do you max your science research? This may be obvious, but do you get directly into monarchy and then increase your science rate? Do you get into republic as soon as you can 'handle' it? The extra trade from republic usually offsets any needed luxuries, if you are ready, and the celebrations are fabulous.

These are just some of the things you might consider.

Once you get Writing you can build Libraries in cities with decent trade arrows, and once you get Trade you should send caravans to set up trade routes as quickly as possible. Try to get started on your SSC as early as practical. Try to make the jump to Republic earlier than you have in the past. That allows extra trade arrows and fast celebrations to large cities. Start with your SSC first, then the rest as you have gold left after making sure the SSC has everything it needs to grow.

I always play monarchy -> communism in deity in order to win by war...
So i try to get always better units than the AI's.

If you try a representative gov like republic or democracy you could be fighting AI musketeers with stealth fighters or howitzers. If your cities are maxed out (which can be done easily in demo/rep by celebrating them) and you have enough luxuries, you can support a large army without worrying about happiness or growth.

Search these fora for power democracy if you're interested, to get some tips:)

when playing monarchy -> communism i don't have to think about happiness and trade... i like to go for gupowder, chivalery -> tactics, machine tools -> robotics, mech. warfer -> nucliar power and forget about anything that is not neccesery...
