Temples are first, definitely, for the reasons already expressed.

Temples. Also, Mike's is a presumption. On Emp/Die it is a necessity. You could certianly win without it, but it would be a hard slog, paying for all those caths.
Cols can help to keep celebrations going, but it is usually more economical to hire Elvis when red faces threaten to spoil the party. You can send Elvis back to work when the party ends. You cannot get back the time and expense of building a col, and can only recoup a small portion of its RB cost by selling it. As someone pointed out, a food shortage could thwart the Elvis hire, but otherwise Cols are the white elephants of happy improvements....

Yep, Ive started to use them also less when playing on higher difficulties. Im also starting to realize even more how wonderful Mike's is.

I agree Marketplaces are a lot better to get a happy city. However, I still build a temple early in a city but mostly for its cultural value. This way, the city area can expand.

I guess he means that you need colosseums in demo if you want to celebrate the city past 20, unless you have a lot of blackies...

Why? Democracy has far better taxes and science. And the disadvanges with warfare can be offset by Women's Suffrage and United Nations.
My prefered government path:
Depo--->Monarchy--->Republic--->Democracy

I don't remember the last time I even built a collusium EVER! They are overcosted and too much maintenance, invest in luxuries.

When i'm working on intrastructure early game, I cant afford to shift too much to luxuries. Sometimes I get a point were I need happiness improvements but have yet to reach Monotheism. For me, that is the time for Colusseum.

No; I meant, what about when you're in Democracy, have only temples, and need to counteract some more unhappy people, such as when you have the fleet out of port on patrol? (No use building a navy if it isn't going to be cruising.) Temples alone won't cut it, especially as your population grows.
Start with temples, and by all means build Adam Smith's; it'll save you a whack of gold. But don't ignore the other goodies to keep people happy. In my experience, you'll need them all at some point or other.

In that case, you'll need either more luxuries or Woman Suffrage/Police Stations.

This is also the time to build courthouses. They help counter the unhappiness caused by units away from a city. In fact, courthouses are a good investment early in the game. The savings they provide from the reduction of corruption in a city more than pays for them in a robust city. AND with adam smith they are maintainance free.

It might be worth an experimentation to see if I could get away without colisseums by building more courthouses. (I tend to neglect them, unless the corruption is over 3 in a city.)

the only time i ever build courthouses is if there aren't any other improvments or there is nothing better to build.

In Demo, you need both: Temples and Coliseums. I first build temples, then aqueducts, then marketplace, then coliseums, then (if available) sewer systems. After Mike's and Bach's (and later Cure for Cance), I put my lux rate to 40 % for some time in order to let my civ grow. Without a coliseum, a city won't grow as much. And in Fundy, temples and coliseums bring you money! (Fundy: 50% science, 50% lux ->celebrating fundamentalism! You don't need any taxes!)
A celebrating fundy city produces the same amount of beakers than a city under a representatiive government. That means: You will earn the same trade bonusses!
