First my specs so if your system is similer, you may have luck with this also...
Athlon XP 1700+ (1.46Ghz)
1GB Ram
Radeon 9800 pro (128 MB)
Windows XP
First, go here and download "Freeram XP Pro". It's a free tool.
So into your "CivilizationIV.ini" file and set the game to either run in windowed mode, or set it to ask you. You need to run in Windowed mode for this to work.
Install and configure Freeram to display your free memory on its taskbar icon and have it running when you want to play Civ4.
Start a game as normal or load a previous game.
Every few turns or when you notice available ram getting low, do the following:
Right click the freeram system tray icon.
Go into tools.
Select "Execute Global Memory Compression"
I'm freeing up like 250+ memory when I do that.
I just played for a solid 4 hours with no crashes. Previously, I was lucky to get one. I did eventually crash, but I got to play a hell of a lot longer then normal.
I wouldn't recomend doing a "autofree". While this doesn't seem to cause the game to crash, it does cause the PC to lock up for a long period of time. if you have a more powerful system, or save games don't take like 10 minutes to load for you, you might have better luck.
