Sigma... Do you plan on continuing the research on Philosophy or do you think that 54 turns might be a little long to spend on one tech at this stage of the game. DaveShack stopped the TC last night to have this discussion brought up.

From the results of this poll, the plan is to head straight for Philosophy. I know it will be a long time to research, but that's the price we have to pay if we want to found a religion on our continent (which I, and most of the citizens, have a great desire to do). Founding a religion would get the civs on our continent on our side, which will make it useful if we have to go to war with any of them (or the civs on the other continent(s)). If we miss this chance to found a religion, I fear that there will not be any religion on our continent until it is brought over from the other continent, and then we are at the mercy of which civs decide to spread their religion first.

Please note that I am speaking as a citizen not as SoW...

Sigma..I voted for Philosophy but to follow a course of research which will take almost all of the term might be a bit futile. There is no guarantee that we will be the first one to discover it. In addition even if we do, we will be really far below on tech. As a science minister I hope you have some concern for that. In addition with the impending hookup of gems, our happiness reasons for getting a religion might not be as pressing. I dont want to "donsig" you with a CI but could we maybe open up another discusssion and poll since that poll was posted 2 weeks ago...things change.

NOW here is my reply as SoW...
The research into non-military based subjects will hamper any military options. I hope that you and the SoS fixed this situation by trade for some militarily useful techs and techs to help production.

///Donsig.....no offense meant..I have a feeling you might like that term for citizens causing officials to consider how the citizens feel now not 3 TCs ago.

Part of the reason to stop the chat was Philosophy being so long, another part was to allow discussion on ways to shorten it if we think we need to. Maybe whipping libraries, hiring scientists, and stunting our growth a bit will be required to get it done. The Science Ministry could take a leadership position on opening discussion, in the direction of "what will we do to get this done" as the question.

DaveShack:
I will open the requested discussion. I wasn't sure whether or not I should post it because the actions that it affects are those of the Minister of Interior and the Governors. I have no problem with trying to speed up our research rate.

Robboo:
My reasoning for pointing you to the poll was that it was decided by an overwhelming majority (~75%). Yes, two weeks may have passed since then, but not many turnchats have happened (the DPs got pretty slow towards the end of March). They also approved Philosophy when it would take 62 turns, from now it would only take 54. I doubt the citizenry would change their opinions so quickly, especially with no imminant threat, and if they had changed their opinions I'd expect someone to have already posted a discussion about it. But in the discussion that I'm about to post, we will see for sure where they stand.
The reason that I'm standing my ground here is not because I'm an enormous supporter of getting Philosophy (though I do believe it is the best option). Rather, it is because it is my goal to come up with an overarcing strategy for our research. Everyone, especially government officials, has a different research path they want to take. If we try to please everybody by going a little bit up each path, then we have no overall strategy - just a bunch of fragmented agendas. If we were to change our research now, it would be going back on the 40+ turns we've already invested in Drama, Meditation, and Philosophy.

The discussion has now been posted HERE. Please continue all discussion about this topic in that thread.

I'm posting this here as I haven't yet had the chance to look at the save, but IMO it would be wisest to continue our path towards Philosophy and Taoism. From what it appears there currently is no religion on our continent. By us having the first and only religion we would be able to spread our beliefs among all the empires of our continent, thereby gaining an upper hand on the diplomacy front as well as earning funds from tithes [read: Taoist Great Temple].
