The Newbie Nightmare
This has been a long-standing gripe with me: that the AI cannot handle raging barbarians game option. Granted, they're tough enough for the player but even on Deity where the AI get lots of bonuses, they still can't handle the barbs. This weakness also makes the Great Wall a must-build wonder: if you do build it, the barbarians will devote all their attacks to your rivals. Granted, I'm exaserbating the issue by building the Great Wall but that's beside the point.
Even with Aggressive AI and Ruthless AI the AI civs can't get any infrastructure going because they're workers are always getting raided. This makes the game far too easy and the human player primarily has to worry about barbarians and not other civs. In my opinion, this is not the way Civ is supposed to be.
Granted, I could just play without Raging Barbarians on. But I like raging barbarians: they're more active, more likely to move around, settle into civilizations, etc. So I'd like to brainstorm some ideas on how to improve the AI's ability to cope with Raging Barbarians and then see if it's something that we can take to Afforess.
First up: does the AI use the new automated actions? For example, do they use the Protect automation to bodyguard their workers? We already know that they patrol to some extent, but it's unclear if this is because of existing Firaxis code or if they're also utilising the new Border Patrol and Hunt automations.
Secondly, are there any settings in XML or Python files that we can tweak to make the AI focus more on barbarians and less on other civs, at least until the barbarian threat is lessened?
Thirdly, if the settings in Revolutions were changed to increase the frequency of barbs settling into minor civs, would this decrease the threat to the AI civs and enable them to develop - or would it just spawn more unaffiliated barbs in turn?
Any thoughts?
