...or "The Art of My Pitiful Attempt to Make Units." Since I can't find any suitable poser props for a unit I had in mind, I decided to try (emphasis on the word "try" here :p ) making units the only way I can - pixel by pixel. :crazyeye:

I've been spending a lot of time making this little guy here. I was thinking of doing a fantasy mod some time. I used the original Civ3 "Samurai" unit as a template and altered the little details. It took about 2 hours to get through the first 13 frames (I still have well over a hundred more frames to go. It'll be quite a while since I finish...

Anyway, when this thing gets completed (whenever that may be  ), it will be an "Elf Kensai" unit. It's kind of hard to see the little elfie ears, though. :D You might notice that there are "white mountain" stripes on the haori jacket. That wite and red thing is supposed to be a headband. I originally was going to make a Shinsengumi unit, but the Civ3 palette doesn't allow many sheads of light blue... How do you like the anime-style hair? :)

My first unit was pixel by pixel.

Believe me, learning a 3d program is much easier, and a much better use of your time.

If you want to learn the hard way, be my guest, but..... I have learned from experience.

I can't afford any good 3d modelling programs. ;) I know about the free 3d modelling programs, but I'm afraid I'm far too much of a computer dunce to understand any of it. Besides, I've gotten so accustomed to doing things pixel by pixel (every one of my city graphics sets were done in the same fashion) that it's virtually no bother.

and that I wonder if I should call the nice men in the white coats ...

I've already got my nice little straight jacket and white padded room. :crazyeye:

now I know "the_mad" means crazy.

animating pixel by pixel isn't a good idea... Your unit looks very nice, but when someone plays the game ussually they do not notice much of the detail, its not the same as with cities which arent moving at all. So i agree that you may want to put all that effort in making other city sets, or resources/terrain etc (why not try to make a terrain set? or a tree set? we still havent got a definitive one) :)

I'd tell you, you are mad... but I suspect you know this already.
Basic 3d software (Bryce & Poser) are fairly easy to use. And can produce pretty good results (Wyrmshadow uses Bryce, Kinboat uses Poser)

Good luck with this unit (clever thread title, btw)
