Some optionnal techs are important, some are not, some are important in some special situation. Why to research chivalry in OCC? Why to research Free artistry if another civ as Globe theater? Everyone is right because every one as his own ideas. My choices would be Democracy. But nationalism is good too, as sanitation, and even chivalry for medieval wars or free art for OCC or any cultural victory.

Republic or Monarchy, as the case may be, to get me out of Despotism.

If I don't have iron, Chivalry and the Knights Templar in C3C.

If I'm going for a 20K victory, then Free Artistry so I can build Shakespeare's theater.

If I'm warmongering, Communism.

My favorites are Ecomonics for Smith's. Nothing like having no maintenance for your markets, banks, harbors, etc... and Republic.

I agree that each game has different best choices. Military Tradition is fantastic in a wargame. Both for being able to build the Military Academy (ergo build your own armies) and for cavalry, but it's unnecessary in a space race, culture or diplomatic goal game. For a 20K game Music Theory & Free Artistry are a must, but Ironclads, Communism & MT are trivial.

You are right. Military trdition is great too for warmongers. But even if you are not, if you are sneak attacked, you will need it. And you DON'T need communism at war. in civ com isn't your friend. Concerning economics, best wealth is important also in OCC because you always produce wealth.

Bah, that's nothing... it's nothing when I saw your post before I posted mine...

EDIT: It's just that my message was 11 characters. :p

republic here too for reasons i think are obvious.

military tradition nationalism and espionage. espionage is not important if im ahead in tech but on higher difficulties i never am at this point. communism is important to me in C3C but not the other versions.

I do not really go for chivalry, republic, or monarchy (i let the ai do it) and i get literature from philosophy, for the gl and libraries. I don't go for any other optional techs besides economics, for smith's trading co.

espionnage? I personnally dislike sealing techs, too much gold, and RISK!!!!! Prefere to buy them. And, generally, when espionnage arrives, you are just starting to be as fast as the AI. AI do not manage their rails well. In my four last games (OK, 2 were OCC), I didn't research it. But it still useful, but not for me. I use spy to know the ennemy's strenght only. But if you do use spies more than me, sure, it's important. (lots of but) :)

Almost simultaneous post 2  Soon, it will be anoying
btw, I'm prettyhappy to see that there is a lot of civ players that answer my thread, and I'm really surprised. Don't stop, I like that

Republic is the only must-have in my book.

MT is second. Even if you play peaceful, you need cavalry to fight off AI stacks of riflemen. And armies are just too good to pass up.

Then again, I can't imagine not getting Literature and not building libraries anywhere. You can't capture libraries or unis, although I'm sure someone here has an ultra warmongering story where no libraries were built.

Oh, right! I remember Sesn's NOT game! I forgot how it went, but they had to use Feudalism... :hmm:

One caution on buying techs from the AI. One of the guru's did a test and once you get into the industrial age, a large lump of cash will cause the AI to either upgrade or rush new units and a large GPT to the AI will increase their science pace. One of the advantages to stealing tech is that the gold disappears, so the AI isn't able to get stronger. On the top levels stealing techs is the main survival tool in the industrial age.

Republick -> deleted -> Steam Engine -> deleted-> Replaceable Parts and then I won the deleted.

For me it's a toss-up between literacy and republic. I can't really see getting by without either. Though in the end I guess Republic's more vital. MT and chivalry are always disposable if you use infantry and artillery instead.
