The CFF Napoleon: Total War boycott.

Meh, I'll probably get it regardless. Despite the bugs, I enjoyed Empire.

I didn't realize this had been announced until now. My reaction is... um..

Well I'm speechless. I feel so raped by this company. I am not going to buy this game unless it gets glowing reviews on gaming forums (actual gamers). Even then... maybe only in 5 years when it's 4.99$ somewhere.

This move is lower than EA's standards.

Nah, let's go to the gaming community, raise capital, and offer to buy Creative Assembly from Sega or else we'll boycott. We need CA out of Sega's corporate hands.

Prior to ETW I would have bought the next installment to the franchise outright. But after many frustrations and a lack of modding for ETW as well as the lame expansion I think I will just torrent the next version to see if it is worth any of my money at all.

I've already bought it but thats mostly because a part of me wishes that they threw ETW under the bus to make this game better

ETW was not polished enough, it should not have been released so early.

NTW, is not different enough to warrant a totally new game.

I'll buy it when it is very cheap or if it gets incredibly rave reviews, though I doubt it will.

ETW got raving so-called "reviews" if I remember well... I think it was alright, I played it for 50-70 hours, which is only a couple of games really. That's a respectable amount of time when compared to games in general these days, but a really low amount of time when compared to the amount of time I spent on strategy games like Civ 4 and EU III.

To miss a lot of this thread, I never understood the obsession with having different faces in each unit. Honestly, I do not care if one guy is the same as the next, I'm not there so I can wonder if Bob knew Jim prior to recruitment in my 9th battalion. Why not, instead of doing these pointless details, actually fix the gameplay bugs previously mention?

Similarly I'm happy with Rome's graphics, stick with them, I don't care (seriously, the graphical difference made nought of a difference to me, going back to the graphics of Shogun might be a little too far though), gameplay, gameplay, gameplay.

Off of the top of my head, I can name a dozen serious problems or broken promises with Empire: Total War: (1) severe bugs and graphical issues; (2) abysmal pathfinding; (3) all of the units are clone legions; (4) siege battles are so broken they're unplayable; (5) campaign AI has no effective means of defending itself despite having as much as 2x as many resources as you do; (6) sharing a border with any faction, even an ally with "very friendly" relations, means automatic war; (7) every faction is at war with each other by the tenth round; (8) factions never settle for peace, as well as other bizarre failures with diplomacy; (9) very little music whatsoever in the game; (10) several features promised and not delivered; (11) all enemy factions appear to have infinite money, as even when all of their ports are blockaded and what not, they can still produce full stacks, leaving all imperatives of "total war" a joke; (12) CA is purposefully disrupting historical accuracy and the laws of physics so that their graphical artists don't feel sad; etc.

The audacity to make Napoleon: Total War a stand-alone game, while addressing very few of these problems, is in all honesty an insult to the community and has depleted the last ounce of respect I had for the TW series. To think that this is the same company that made Shogun and Rome is mind boggling.

Erm.... lol? You don't have to throw such a fit. I for one will buy the game. Every game has problems and Empire more than made up for its problems with being a fantastic game at the core. You should use mods. As for your argument:

1. Haven't had too many problems, but I can't argue with you.
2. I've had a few problems with that but not many.
3. I could care less.
4. Not so much they are unplayable, but... grappling hooks... *sigh*
5. Yes they do?
6. No it doesn't? As the UP, Poland, and Russia, I have managed to keep almost all of my neighbors almost perfectly peaceful, aside from perhaps one. And the game is called "Total War" you know
7. You got what you asked for. The game is called Total War.
8. All too true on that one..
9. I agree, can't stand the constant, single, repetitive soundtrack in battles.
10. Everyone does that.
11. I don't know what you mean in the slightest. It's very possible to kill someone by strangling their economy, I've done it as the UP vs France and as Poland vs Prussia. It sounds to me like you're just whining since you can't beat the AI and therefore assume it has infinite money.
12. Historically, small ships HAVE beaten larger ships. And do you propose that they just add in a "magic giant ship" with lazer beams that annihilates everything else?

As for modding tools.... there are still great mods out there.

If it's purely about war and nothing else at all, why include diplomacy? Historically, countries generally didn't spontaneously declare war on a much stronger country for no reason at all and refuse to ever give up even if it leads to certain destruction.

What is Empire:TW like to play now? I bought it at the release but it was too buggy to play on my laptop. I thought my lappy (i.e. Vaio VGN-FZ18L) wasn't powerful enough to play it on just campaign but now realise it was all just bugs that made it laggy. Does it play better now? Should I try it again?

They have fixed a lot of bugs and naval invasions work now. Still doesn't have any (or at least it has barely been improved) better diplomacy than the previous games.

God damn AI is still unreasonable in its demands.

Have you people ever played the previous TW games? AFAIK all the TW games (since Rome anyway) have been broken. It's not like this is a new thing. I'm not saying we should accept it, I'm just saying that you shouldn't be surprised. I suggest you buy TW games 1-2 years after release: then a lot of the bugs have been fixed and the modding community is much more active. I, for one, am still playing M2TW.

I'm hoping that one day they will release a TW game where the basics (AI, bugs etc.) have been fixed, though I'm not exactly holding my breath.

Maybe Civilisation and Total War should merge into one ULTIMATE game! i.e. use TW for graphics/battles and Civ for gameplay/strategy.

Yes, I own them all. Although the first two are too unstable for me to play for some reason.

It is highly disappointing that Creative Arts have barely improved their ability to make games, they are still very similar upon release with many of the same problems each time that have to be fixed in patches.

I think they should focus on releasing a TW game that actually works, I don't need those extra gimmicks (naval battles, all soldiers looking differend etc).

Maybe Civilisation and Total War should merge into one ULTIMATE game! i.e. use TW for graphics/battles and Civ for gameplay/strategy.

Propably anyone who has played both games has thought about this. Play civilization on the campaign map (though it would have to be limited to classical/medieval Europe) and fight the battles TW style. It would be the King Of All Strategy Games

Though I've never played ETW, I have played all the others and unfortunately they all have the same problem. As someone mentioned "The game is called Total War and that's what u get"

The diplomacy in my opinion is absolutely terrible. They might as well not even bothered putting it in at all. Factions form alliances and don't respect them. And there's no downfall by not respecting said alliances. No loss of national stability like EEIII or unrest with other factions like Civilization III.

But unfortunately that's one of the bad points of the game that they refuse to fix with each upgrade.

They would rather constantly upgrade the graphics of the game instead of actually improving the game engine.

I for one don't understand the hype of a game with great graphics when the core engine of the game needs so much work. I would rather see an upgrade to the actual engine of the game and keep the graphics of RTW or even MTW vanilla.
I can still play EU I or civilization II with it's cheesy graphics and play all night.

Don't get me wrong the battle engine itself in The original total war was well done in it's time and was a refreshing change from earlier real time strategy games. It's just they haven't done anything to improve the diplomacy aspect in the game since.

Hopefully the game developers are reading this and will see our point of view.
